And I think it proves my point last week, and the point was driven home yesterday

Last week, I said that we used Percy too much.

I was greeted with responses like

"We cant be afraid of him getting hurt"
"If he is lethal, and helps us win, then why not"

All valid points, but the number one reason I felt we used him too much because we cannot be too predictable on offense.

Yesterday, last drive. We went to him on the sweep and D was waiting for it.

As much as I like Bevell, that was not a good play call. I feel we could have utilized our other players better on that one.

Last week I was chastised when I said we didn't run enough.......... Well this week we didn't run enough. Lynch was getting 5 plus yards a pop. LEan on him. Especially in the second half when your D has been on the field all first half. Give it to the beast and slow this shit down. So frustrating.

Where is Wilson and his quick drop and throws? Why all the gimicks if we have as much faith in Wilson as they claim. Agreed that Jet sweep at that time was a poor call. It just felt like we outsmarted ourselves on that call.

My worst call of the day goes to punting on 4th and 2, putting the Defense back on the field after just sucking wind all day long.

Hello...That was ridiculous. I threw my hat down when that happened. The D was absolutely D O N E way before the 4th quarter.

That one is on Pete.

You don't run that jet sweep deep in your territory on the last drive of the game. Stop being cute.

I agree they overused the jet sweep yesterday. Not only with Harvin but they also used Lockette too. Against GB, they actually threw to Harvin. I don't recall Harvin getting any passes to him downfield, just jet sweep plays. Chargers figured out what they were doing fairly easily because of it.

Agree with all points. The 4th and 2 was something that Pete normally goes for. Surprised they didn't especially since Lynch was averaging over 5 yards a carry and should have been plenty fresh to just pound it through 2 yards.

The jet sweep was really bad though. You knew they were going to run that play there. San Diego knew it too.

They hadn't actually given it to Harvin on that play all day. Just dumb to do it when everyone knew it was coming.

The worst play call IMO was the bubble screen to................Walters.

I'd like to see more verticality out of the play calling. Richardson has yet to even sniff a target. Why aren't we lining Percy and Richardson on the outside and throwing it deep more?

Sure all the horizontal deception plays can work, but defenses are going to start recognizing that crap (like SD did) unless we make them back off with go routes more often. You drafted Richardson, use him. Dude caught like 20 deep TD's all through training cap burning the DB's.

It wasn't a terrible play call, it was executed terribly. Baldwin got blown the frig up.

On a similar note though, the fly sweep will continue to be dominant if we execute, but I do believe we need to mix in a few more play actions off of the fly sweep. Hit Baldwin or flanker on a quick skinny post. WRs will be looking to blow up the edge run, and left in the dust.

I am really surprised they haven't used Richardson at all. I thought the whole reason he was drafted was to give us that speed guy to pair with Harvin.

Why don't they line up Lockette, Harvin, and Richardson on the field? That would be tough to cover.

He was our first draft pick this year and raved about him all offseason. Do something with him!

Great points. This surprised me as well. They used Harvin very effectively against GB. Not sure why they didn't put in more of those plays against SD. Harvin was very underutilized in the vertical passing game for whatever reason. To boot, the Chargers were without their top corner. This was the time to spread out and get the passing going (vertically). They started that with Kearse but then stopped and never used Harvin in that capacity.

I think ignoring all weapons not named Percy could cause problems. It's not that I don't enjoy watching him do his thing, it's that when he goes down the offense will be forced to change how they play. The other guys have to be involved too.

Those bubble screens are annoying. Russell is better than that. Russell is holding the ball too long on other pass plays though and he needs to learn to step UP instead of running twenty yards backwards when pressured.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was exasperated with this call, and talking about how foolish it was under the circumstances. With the Chargers defense playing as aggressively as they were, that was an ideal time to use Percy as a decoy and go downfield.

I realize this is silly to say, but the fact that the Percy fly sweep was called there seemed a bit like 'mailing it in' on Bevell's part. I'm hoping the lack of awareness and imagination on Bevell's part was due to the heat, and not a relapse to the frustrating play calling of year's past.
