This part I like:

“Forget the numbers,” Bumpus said. “The numbers play tricks on you sometimes. Watch the film. And the reason why I like what I saw on film: a fullback was used. You’ve got jet sweep. Off the jet sweep, you’ve got split zone. You have offsets. You’re in shotgun. You’re under center. You’ve got wide zone. There’s a quick game. There’s double tight ends. There’s shifts. There’s tosses. There’s dropbacks. There’s power. There’s trap. It’s a multiple type of offense, and I think (quarterback Geno Smith) will benefit from being under center a lot more than he was last year.

Literally EVERYTHING we didn't have with Grubb.

Sounds nice. Hopefully he can install a bunch of that in his first year. Let's see what he does with the staff over the next few weeks. Couldn't blame the guy if he wants to bring his own crew in, but I was hoping for limited turnover this go around.

I think he fits Geno's strengths to a T, underneath stuff and running game with the over the top throws once set Up, John Taylor, Jerry Rice type offense with Tyler, Craig in the back field.

More than half the league has this stuff.

If somebody mentions the eye test to others on this board, they get crucified and told they don't know anything because so and so stats point to something else. Strange how that works.
I'll take the word of someone who knows the ins and outs of the game and watched the tape over randoms on a message board who sit in their recliners with a beer and think they can throw a football over them mountains.

I understand, but i'll still trust what I see over a bunch of numbers pointing in all kinds of directions.

I definitely like the addition of Kubiak but what's more important is personnel and fixing the 2 guard and center position. Grubb was not great but it's really hard to coach around a dumpster fire at OL. Grubb definitely should have called passing plays that didn't take so long to develop but it is absolutely impossible to scheme a running game when the OL was as bad as it was. He tried calling run plays but it always resulted in 0 or negative yards. He also didn't call play action very much but that is contigent on how effective your running game is.

Schneider is gonna have to draft OL and get OL in FA because the last 15 years of neglect and bad picks has been terrible but I honestly wonder how much influence Pete had on this because building everything from athletic positions(CB/S/RB/WR) first was a horrible, horrible way of building, up front matters most.

Love the hire of Kubiak. He is innovative and provides multiple set opportunities per series. Look forward to seeing his impact this year.

Which is why I find it odd our biggest Geno supporters seem to be the ones that aren't thrilled about Kubiak. He is bringing everything they complained Grubb didn't use. I don't get it. Well I do have a theory but that's for another time.

Thats because being a great coordinator isnt JUST about running plays. Ive used this example more times than i can count. Any coordinator can look at the Chiefs on Sunday or work with McVay (or Shanahan) copy their plays and run them thenselves. But even if you have solid personnel, just having the plays and not knowing when to use them or how to effectively teach them and HOW to deploy them is like having an open book test in calculus but not understanding how to use the formulas - if you dont understand how to apply the formulas, its useless.

Waldron knew how to draw the plays, he knew the source material, worked shoulder to shoulder with the author and was clueless when it came to the sunday chess match that is NFL football.

Half the league runs motion, PA, splits, rollouts, under center and ahotgun... half the league runs the offense shanahan runs. Just because Grubb was an idiot when it came to the NFL game doesnt mean that just because we have an NFL level coordinator who does 'NFL things' doesnt mean we have hit the jackpot. Many try to replicate what McVay has done, poaching from his tree. And how many succeed?

If a coordinator doesnt have a great feel for the how and when to call plays, vary personnel, match run to pass and help manage his o line, he can call all the cool plays he wants and its not gonna work.

And more evidence that points to being less than enthused?

Have you looked at hiw his offense trended in 2021 in Minnesota?

In 2021, kubiaks offense averaged 414 yards per game with a high 571in the first 6 week. Over the last 6 game? 329.

Take out a dud of a game against the Browns and his offense averaged 28 ppg over his first 6 games. He averaged 24 over the last 6.

1st downs? His offense averaged 22.4 over the first 6 weeks, 16.8 over the last 6.

Passing yards - 288 over the first 6 weeks. 217 over the last 6.

Folks give him a pass for the fall off last year due to injury. But his offense fell off in Minnesota as well and not by a little bit. And that was BEFORE he went to SF to learn from Shanahan.

Are there other contributing factors that impacted the offense? Sure. Minnesotas defense wasnt great that year for one. But acting as though we should all be excited JUST because the dude runs motion and whatever else... its like getting excited about a car because it has nice wheels, cool paint job, a wing on the back and the exhaust sounds cool. Those are all things a great sports car might have. But absent real engineering, its all just tacked on sh't from pep'boys.

Lets see what he does

He wasn't my pick for OC, and I expressed my opinion on why he shouldn't before his interview:

This was my post from 10 days ago (https://www.seahawks.net/threads/seahawks-request-interview-with-grant-udinski.201847/post-3016636)

We are likely to hire candidate "but", and I am ok with it, just keep remind myself to control my expectations. A short story of candidate "but".

Kubiak, aka candidate "but", may be a safe pick as he checked all the boxes, however, one can put a "BUT" next to all the boxes.
Minnesota Vikings
In 2013, Kubiak was hired by the Minnesota Vikings as an offensive quality control and assistant wide receivers coach under offensive coordinators Bill Musgrave (2013) and Norv Turner (2014).
BUT, no NFL team offered jobs to him post-Vikings, so he downgraded to:
Kansas
In 2015, Kubiak accepted a position at the University of Kansas to coach the wide receivers
BUT, Daddy dear came to rescue:
Denver Broncos
On February 22, 2016, Kubiak was hired by the Denver Broncos as an offensive assistant while his father, Gary Kubiak, was the head coach of the team. During the 2017 season, Kubiak assumed responsibilities as the primary quarterbacks coach for the final six weeks of the regular season after Bill Musgrave was promoted to offensive coordinator.
BUT, after 3 years as QB coach, no OC offers, so
Minnesota Vikings (second stint)
On January 14, 2019, Kubiak was hired by the Minnesota Vikings as their quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and head coach Mike Zimmer.[8]
BUT, Daddy helped again:
On February 8, 2021, Kubiak was promoted to offensive coordinator, replacing his father, Gary Kubiak, following his retirement
BUT, after OC for Vikings, he wasn't kept by Viking, so he was downgraded to:
On February 2, 2022, Kubiak was re-hired by the Denver Broncos as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator Justin Outten and head coach Nathaniel Hackett.[10] Following offensive struggles to start the 2022 season, Hackett relinquished play calling duties to Kubiak on November 20
BUT, he didn't save Russell Wilson as Broncos moved on to Payton and he downgraded again:
San Francisco 49ers
On March 23, 2023, Kubiak was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as their passing game coordinator.
Finally, OC offer from:
New Orleans Saints
On February 14, 2024, the New Orleans Saints hired Kubiak to be their new offensive coordinator for the 2024 season, replacing the Saints' longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.
Now, he is looking again!

Klint ain't considered by team executives as a boy wonder like McVay or Mike Shanahan. He floated around in the league for a long time and with plenty of help from family connections, he finally made it to OC. A long and winding road.

And... if you listen to the interview D Jeremiah just did with Brock and Salk on Kubiak, he said a few positive things about Kubiaks offense, the biggest being its fairly common in the league so its easy to get personnel to fit it.

Biggest drawback? When you fall behind in a game its a difficult system to consistently come back in.

Ironically, there was an interview i was listening to today on Wymans program where he spoke to Mathew Paras a journalist who covers the Saints in NO. His biggest criticism of Kubiaks system? When they fell behind, they struggled to claw there way back. He acknowledged that the injuries were likely part of the problem... but not all of it.

So again, color me not enthused until I can see proof he is something more than what he has shown himself to be.
