He's going to make $52 million next year. Wow. Glad he's back but at this price? Uh oh...

We will probably have to cut a few defensive players just to stay under the cap. Woods, Mone, Harris, Jefferson all likely candidates. Brooks is likely out awhile.

So before the draft starts the defense is already worse than last year. Even if we killed the draft this year on defense, rookies don't generally make a huge impact year 1.

This is all why I was against signing Geno. He's fine as a QB, but the roster isn't set up for a playoff push. Also, of we don't take a QB we are likely picking in the 15-25 range for the next few drafts, and not likely to have access to a top QB again.

From what's leaking so far, Geno's cap hit should be well under $20 million and we need to cut some of the defensive players from last year, they did not play up to their contracts. This contract along with the necessary cuts leaves us room to pay the rookies and still get a few key free agent players.

I'm not sure how our defense can get much worse than it was for many of our losses last season. A rookie qb is almost a guarantee of needing at least a year or two to get into contention. Keeping Geno keeps a pretty good offense stay together (for the most part) and allows the front office to concentrate on improving us where we need it most, on defense.

I agree with that but Im thinking maybe

Maybe

Maybe

Seahawks draft Richardson or Wills at #5 and cut Geno after 2 years?
That would be ideal. I still think it's a bad move, because the window to be competitive, is in 2-3 years and we are likely eating some dead money on Geno then.

Don't forget, there's a huge difference between cash paid and cap usage.

IF (and it's still not confirmed) he gets $52 million in cash, he could easily have a cap hit of $18 million next season.

Now the question is what do they do with Lock. IMO if they let go of Lock in FA then that opens up Qb in the draft as I doubt they go into the season with 3 QBs

Geno will not back down and get comfortable, he is a leader and will take this as HIS team on the field, will be good! How do I hibernate until the morning of the draft? this is too much.

Draft strategy WIDE OPEN now! Probably lessens the chances of another team feeling the need to leapfrog us for a QB, yet we can still take one if there's one we really like at 5.

This will be the first big clue about the draft. It's all about the numbers. I don't see him shouldering the team to a SB but he could be a very good piece of a run if the price is conducive to team building. Of course it helps to have 5-6 starters (or more depending on the draft) on rookie deals for the next 2 years.
The next clue will be what they do with Drew Lock. If they let him walk then I'm thinking QB at 5. If they resign him then probably not drafting a QB, at least not at 5.
