Not to criticize JS or PC, but, what was the logic behind cutting Brooks, Cherrington, Howard and Siliga and then turning around and trading for D' Anthony Smith who has only played 8 games in his career? Was it money? Some of the DT's they cut had pretty good camps/games. Just wondering......

My guess?

Pete recruited him out of High school and wanted him at USC but he chose to go elsewhere.

Pete followed his college career and he and John really liked him in 2010 but the Jags got him first.

They've been waiting and hoping that he'd break free and were ready to pounce when he did.

That how it usually works with this crew. These decisions aren't made in an instant, they a made over years.

Smith was one of the more athletic linemen in his draft class. Great 40 for a big man, outstanding verticals. He was a third round pick for a reason with an upside exceeding the likes of Silaga, Cerrington, McDonald and perhaps Brooks and Howard.

True... Some of the DTs we cut did have some pretty good games in our defense. Question is... Will D'Anthony Smith stay healthy and play better than the guys we cut when he's plugged in? Would Howard or Brooks look as good as D'Anthony Smith looked this preseason if they were plugged into Jacksonville's defense?

Brooks, Cherrington, Howard and Siliga probably have only played 8 NFL games combined. So the experience thing is not really on the table. Neither is money, since they were all on rookie contracts. Id agree with McGruff, the crew must believe he has much higher upside. Seems significantly more athletic, at the very least.
