Lmao dude, its his first year at LB, he's making rookie contract money for another 2 years PLUS, not hearing his name too much is a good thing. If we heard his name too much itd be because busted coverage or whiffs on tackles. He's played solid and will only be better at LB next year.


39 combined tackles, 8 assists, 2.0 sacks, 1 int and 2 passes defended. Not too shabby for a player who is rotated with Wagner, KJ and Smith and is still learning the position.

I haven't been a fan of Bruce Irvin's. I didn't like the pick and was disappointed in what I saw out of him at DE last season. I like moving him to OLB, but it's going to take some time for him to learn the position. I have been encouraged to see that he's starting to figure out pass coverages. He made a fantastic pick a few games back and although his sack numbers might not show it, he has been getting some decent pressure.

But as most have pointed out, it's way too early to discuss cutting him, but I don't want to count on him long term, either. If a player comes to us next season either via the draft or free agency and we see an opportunity to upgrade, we should pull the trigger and let him compete with Irvin. One of the things I like about Pete is that he doesn't seem to care about whether or not he's used a draft choice to acquire someone. If they are not playing up to expectations, they're out.

I think Rice, Clemons and Miller maybe get dropped while we try to resign Sherman, Thomas, Tate, Baldwin and Bennett.

May not be enough cuts though. Cap looks like it's going to be around $126.3m when it was $123m this year. Plus we get to carry over any leftover cap from this and I believe we have a couple mil to carry over as well.

Are you nuts!? Drop Clemons!? Sure Rice, too much money for too little play. Miller, I don't know. I think Wilson has another year of developing and Miller is still an excellent blocking TE. But Clemons? No way. The only reason he's not our sack leader again is A) coming back from an injury and B) teams are keying on him, which is opening things up in a big way for Avril and Bennett. The dude is the captain of that line. There are other ways to make the money work.

To address the original question, Irvin stays. He costs us little, and has huge potential, and for a guy that made such a dramatic change in position, he's done a great job.

I think Irvin has done a great job, last year his only job was to come in on situational downs and "mad rush" the passer and he did that very well. This year he has developed into a LB that can come off the line and cover (with help over the top) some of the TE along with controlling his lane when rushing the passer (something he did not do well last year), give this kid another year or two and we will be saying "what do we need to do to keep this guy"

OP admitted he wasn't sure what Bruce was making. He said he'd cut him IF that meant being able to keep Bennett or Sherman and I suspect we'd all agree with that. Turns out Bruce isn't making that much, so it's not really going to come down to keeping Bruce vs. keeping someone else.

I don't see how the original post reads as "cut him now."

Since Bennett is on a 1 year deal, the FO would need to start figuring out ways to keep him now. I don't think they will be able to.

A lot of that depends on Bennett. Everything I've read and heard suggests that he's very happy to be back in Seattle, and I imagine playing on a SB contender in a place he loves gives Seattle the inside track to giving him a long-term deal. We may lose some middle-tier guys as a result, but that's about to start happening, anyway... we're hitting that point in our franchise development when we will start locking stars up in long-term, mutually-beneficial deals (like Chancellor) and start letting other guys hit FA while we groom their low-cost, home-grown replacements. It'll be difficult to see some fan favorites depart, but it has to happen for the team to remain young and always in contention.

If you're feeling a bit disappointed with Bruce, you just have to remember that we have the best defense in the NFL. To have the best defense in the NFL, everyone has to do their job and do it well, playing as a unit. This is why we have a couple guys on the D with big stats (Thomas, Sherman), and the rest won't really stand out to you. On a defense that relies on linebackers to drop back in coverage and play man a fair bit, our pass defense is tops in the league. This is evidence that Irvin has been doing his job in coverage, an aspect that is sometimes overlooked in linebackers. I rarely see Irvin get burned for a catch, and I think he has huge potential with all his physical tools. You don't have to flash every play to be considered a solid player, sometimes when you aren't noticed it's because you aren't making many mistakes.

ROFL. I was wondering how long it would take before the "cut Irvin" posts would show up.

Some folks have said he's still devleoping, and he hasn't played LBer in the NFL before. Here's the deal: Irvin hasn't played LBer at ANY level, EVER (unless it was in peewee league and we can't account for that). He played FS in HS and Jr. College, and DE in a 3-3-5 at WVU. He never really played DE in a 4-3 before he came to us.

His instincts are spot on. Sure, he's made some mistakes and missed some cut back lanes, but so has everyone on our defense. His run fills, when right, are scary fast and dynamic. He makes plays 30 yards downfield, and makes it look easy. Like someone else mentioned, he erases RBs out his side and TE's in his hook zone.

All this in his first year at the position, and 2nd in the pros. There's a ton of guys that play DE and LB that take until the 3rd year to "Get it" and they've played the position all their lives. Bruce has played both in his first 2 years and done pretty decent at both. This year, he's actually down 4 games due to suspension. He's nowhere near his ceiling.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: by the end of next year, Irvin is our best LBer.
