I imagine that less practice has a negative impact on any team one the one hand, on the other, is less physical wear and tear beneficial in other areas of performance?

Probably not. They're not getting hit the way they do in real games.

I don't know the answer to your question but I hope that it doesn't play any role.
You expect less practice to not have any sort of drop-off in performance whatsoever, even a tiny bit?

I expect world class athletes and their coaches & trainers to do the necessary preparation so that the athletes can perform at the highest levels possible when called upon to do so. And since all teams are held to the same practice time standards then any drop-off would probably even out across the board.

It is obviously the ST coordinator's fault.

If you think Special Teams the reason we're 7-1, you need to put down the crack pipe.

I can't, it's burned to my lips. But in all seriousness, I'm worried about the special teams. They seemed to have regressed from last year. And blocked kicks are a big deal, unless some think that they happen all the time. Damn me for commenting on special teams I guess. One would think they were sacrosanct with all the holier than thou comments in here. :)

Haha naw I think you have a right to be concerned. I think we're gonna be ok though.

I don't think fewer practice sessions should be considered the genesis of any kind of fluke plays like the blocks returned for TD. Sometimes weird things just happen, regardless of how prepared for them you might be. Our defense has had fewer practice sessions, too, but it seems to be flat-out dominating... even more than they did last year.

In the end, I think we can pin most of this year's struggles on a few factors:

1. Injuries along the O-line. Yeah, you can talk about how they weren't impressive in Weeks 1 and 2 as well when they had all the starters, but offenses are usually still getting timing issues sorted early in the season, and we went up against two very good defenses during that time. Since then, we've been dealing with backups at some of the most important positions on the team, and it's showing in the offensive performances.

2. A couple of bizarre plays. Our special teams has been remarkably good outside of one play against Indy and one against Tennessee. Those two plays happened in close enough proximity to suggest a special teams issue, but that ignores the solid play the unit has delivered through the rest of the season. I'm comfortable calling them flukes.

3. Getting each team's best shot due to the hype around the Seahawks this year. Seattle's got a huge target on its back right now. They're a SB favorite, and every team on the schedule tells itself, "If we take THESE guys down, then we prove we're legit SB contenders." No one's going to be taken by surprise by Seattle. No one's going to overlook them. We're going to be everyone's litmus test this year, and it's showing in the performances against us. If we let down intensity or focus even a little, it can bite us in the ass.

Still, we're in remarkable shape at 7-1, and we've finished the brutal part of our schedule. There's no reason we shouldn't be 10-1 going into our bye week, which puts us on the inside track for a bye week and maybe even HFA.

It's the NFL. Good or bad plays are 'almost' happening on nearly every down. Paper-thin separation between success and failure is the norm, so color me confused.

John Madden talked a lot about long snappers in his first book.

He said you get used to your long snapper as he slows down a bit on velocity. Then the other team has more time to block your punts.

He first changed after using the same one for years and was amazed at how much faster the ball got back to his kickers. Perhaps that's the problem here and we need to be looking for a new long snapper.

Another hard spot to fill.

I didn't think i was whining, just posting about a legitimate concern with special teams. The concern isn't with "almost" but with the pattern of blocked kicks we have had.

I'd appreciate a legitimate comment on the post instead of the automatic "I'm in a bad mood so going to call this whining post" that i see all too much of in this forum lately.

There are a lot of new people in this forum and i would like to encourage them to post, not discourage. Way to much i see an early negative post then ten more that echo it with no actual discussion. That doesn't encourage discourse in any way.

I was looking for thoughts on why this team has struggled with blocks on special teams and i see a near block as an indication that the problem has yet to be fixed. Guess i need to spell it out in order to prevent knee jerk responses.

I only recall two blocks, a punt and a kick but both had some insane circumstances.

You had the blocked punt in the 49ers game because of a loud whistle from the stands, and then the blocks FG where our back up holder, Maragos, fumbled and bumbled.

Was there anymore?
