Linemen? All the time in the case of OTs. Now guards and centers are a different story. This kid might be special though. Strongest lineman to come out of college in a long time (730 squat, 575 bench if I remember right). He's also a leader who will demand accountability, which obviously as a rook might rub some vets the wrong way, but I think we need a leader on the line who is just a football monster who sets an example with a nasty streak.

I'm pretty sure Mael was right, it was Steve Everitt by the Browns in 1993. Wasn't anything special.

Steelers did take Maurkice Pouncey at 18 and the Lions took Frank Ragnow at 20, and neither of those teams are complaining now. Alex Mack at 26, Nick Mangold at 29, and Travis Frederick at 31 were studs also. Some really bad ones in the first round too though. I remember one that was hyped as the "best center prospect in the last ten years". Name was Chris Spencer.

The interior was sooooo bad last season, It’d make Geno uncomfortable, run lanes weren’t there, just a mess of bad coaching, bad technique, softness, and talent. I wouldn’t be mad at drafting a center that high, specially if he’s as good as advertised.

For reference, KICKER has been taken in the top 17 picks more recently than center has (Janikowski 17th overall in 2000 vs. Damien Woody 17th overall in 1999).

Us taking JPJ at 16 would be the largest draft investment in a center in over 30 years. We have to go back to 1993 when Steve Everitt was taken 14th overall by the Browns. It's a big, big, big outlier to take a center in the first half of the first round in the modern NFL.

Potentially drafting JPJ would fall in the BPA category depending on the Hawks board it could happen and have JPJ play guard.

So, 16th would be the highest since 1993.

I added parentheticals for each of the 1st round picks and their outcomes (if they were Seahawks, I added their names). You have to go back 8 1st round centers to find your first All-Pro. And only 3 out of the 15 first round centers ever became an All-Pro. That seems like a poor rate for studs.

Well, the Bears play against one of those guys — Frank Ragnow. He’s Pro Bowl quality.

JPJ looks worthy of a mid-to-late first round pick. If the Seahawks want to trade up to #9 for McCarthy or Nix, it could be a win-win trade for both teams.

Ah. Right. He was multi-positional coming out but settled at center in rookie year. Guess that drives his absence on most of the Center draft history lists.

Guess that makes sense, but for the general point to those who endorse going IOL at 16 (not you, JGreen).... was Pouncey really that good of a pick at 15? He was sandwiched between two significantly more valuable players at more valuable positions on the field in Quinn and Kerrigan.

I mean, he's about as good as you can hope for when drafting an IOL, and it was STILL a suboptimal choice.

The upside is so, so, so limited with an IOL in that range.

I fully agree it’s too high but I think hawkblogger made the argument that fixing the line might be the easiest way to add a win or two. This years class is a good one and you pick in a range where you can almost guarantee a good one. Probably makes us better on throw downs which helps the defense as well.

We really need to address qb first as its very possible Penix, Nix and McCarthy go by the first or early second. Both Bo and Mike are players that we have waited for A year for.

This years class I see as better than 2025, in which Shedeur Sanders is being forecasted as a top prospect; if true, that’d make the class of 2025 look Like 2022 whereas your top picks were Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder.
