The Ringer put out their annual draft guide this past week. I thought it was funny that their NFL comparison for Penix is "a Southpaw Geno Smith".
I've actually compared him (half jokingly) to geno a few times. Both 6'3 221/213 so similar in size, both pocket passers, both play in seattle, geno tore his acl on the right side too.... But that's about where it is. Completely different ball distribution (who/where) and mechanics... Still that's a weird amount in common lol

A scout I saw recently said purely on film he’s the best QB in the draft and does things very, very few guys in the NFL can even do. The only thing that will knock him is if his joints are in terrible shape. But I’m with you, tape wise he’s special.
He took scans with the head physician of the rams/dodgers and is apparently going to talk to teams about them if they want.

Doubt dude would risk his career if he wasn't sure it looks good.

30 players skipped the senior bowl.

Bo and rattler were "limited".

Should these guys be taking snaps from guys they worked with all week who might not get another chance?

Literal nothing burger, you can't even find a box score for it online lmao.

Did you even watch the NC? Was one of his worse games surely? That being said, like 5 big drops (3 maybe 4 on Polk, one on tybo, at least one more), his defense gave up 174 rushing yards in the first quarter so dl could pin their ears back, especially when uw rb could barely walk, literally.

I guess the lights weren't on when he threw 29/38 430 2/0 with 30 rushing yards.

"that playoff game doesn't count! "

Y'all are clowns 🤡 honk honk
Cool. So I said I watched the national championship game, and you ask if I did. And whoever disagrees with you is a clown.

Ok. So the questions asbto how good Penix will be isn't one just being asked by us clowns. The dudes stock has taken a precipitous drop since that game. And you speak as if YOU didn't watch the game. Sure UW gave up big plays on the ground early on but the D kept them in the game until the 4th. And what did Penix do? The exact opposite of what great players do in great moments. He folded. Looked dejected, confused, and missed throws everywhere. I was with a UW grad who does watch the games and he remarked that he played so poorly it seemed like he'd been paid to take a dive. Not my characterization, his.

Putting up incredible stats in the regular season and even a playoff game and then folding under the spotlight of the big stage isn't a characteristic that encourages faith, sorry to tell you. And you can quote his body of work all you want, but that game happened. The big moment came and went and he watched it go by. Everybody saw it and he has to overcome it himself.

And frankly, I think Rattler skipping was equally as calculated. The dude has all the arm talent in the world. Has he shown anything that says there's a great chance it will translate to the NFL? I'm sure he'll have some great highlight plays like Kyler Murray does. But more than that? I'd be surprised if he becomes a top 12 talent.

And given his injury potential and what he's shown when the real pressure is on, I doubt Penix will either. But that's just what I think... and we've established that I'm just a clown.

If he quit (and that's what it would be), he'd be considered one of the biggest wusses in sports history. And whether you intend to or not you're implying it. Thinking about retiring when you're at your lowest is not the same thing as getting healthy and saying "well, don't wanna go through that again, I got mine, deuces losers!"

Also guy last year at pick 16 got 15.4, 8.2 guaranteed. It'll be slightly higher than that but not by much.

Beyond the implications made, penix would burn through that 8 on lawyers after the hawks tried to recoup it.

Consider yourself lucky you've never been through PT for something like this. I'm sure he was just dreaming of the money after his fourth season ending injury when he still came back 🙄.... Just hope you know that it's OK to be worried about injuries, but even suggesting he might hang it up is pretty much "suggesting" he's a bitch.
My God, you and I have different worldviews. In no way was I thinking or suggesting he'd be doing anything wrong. I completely disagree with your assertion that not making a comeback would make him a "wuss", to use your term, or a loser, or God forbid, "a bitch". I don't even know what you mean by that. To me, a bitch is a female dog.

I don't think in those terms. Also, as a lawyer, I don't think the Seahawks would have any possibility of recovering the guaranteed part of his contract. That's the point of a guarantee, to protect in the event one is injured.

Penix' mediocre showing in the ship might be a blessing in disguise. Otherwise he would likely be gone before 16. That said, Nix appears to me to be just as NFL ready, won nearly as much as Penix, isn't a lefty, and doesn't have the injury history. Their slate is wiped clean when they start in the nfl, so Nix could be a sneaky home run long term pick to my untrained eyes. Curious what the coaches think.

No thanks on Bo and 3
I knew you would say that. If you take your Husky homer glasses off though, you have to admit Nix is a very good qb. He did lose to Penix 3x, so I get your skepticism, but that's a moot point if Penix won't last due to injury concerns. Just sayin'.

He is good, just not clutch. Even my friend Matt (Slickhawk from KJR) said he doesn't like his upside. He's a huge Duck fan.
I couldn't care less where a player comes from if they come here and help the team win. I wouldn't have a problem with them drafting him at all.
I just don't see him as being clutch. Not just because I'm a UW fan. I could say the same exact thing about all the people who want to act like Penix sucks and is made of glass.

That's a really awful thing to imply man.

Yeah he suffered 4 season ending injuries in a row all as a ruse to swindle the team that drafts him.

Everyone who has suffered terrible injuries like that has that type of moment.

I'm not going to go any further with this... I hope you didn't mean to, but what you're implying goes beyond football and is a terrible thing to imply about someone's character.
I mean, I don't see it as a slander against his character so much as a historical fact.

There are very few players who come into the league with Penix's injury history who go on to any type of success. They usually are forced into retirement by their bodies. It isn't that they don't have the heart, it's that they'd have to spend the majority of their life permanently rehabbing and that stunts their ability to be effective while also increasing the chance of further missed time.

He's got another ACL tear before he'd be 1 of 1 to succeed at the QB position with that level of trauma in his career, and those aren't his only injuries. He's got significant injuries in his past to both of his shoulders, as well.

There's a lot of risk here, and history tells us this could make him a pretty severe longshot to not deal with at least SOME availability issues as a potential full-time starter, and potentially a significantly shortened career.

I agree with you. We don't know which of these guys, if any, will be successful in the NFL and Nix has some advantages. I don't personally buy into the "not clutch" narrative. Every contest is new and different, with lots of factors that influence outcome, plus players mature and change and grow.

I love Penix' arm. He has an ability, at times and under the right circumstances, to throw pinpoint passes way downfield. It's extraordinary. But there are concerns. Injury and ability to play under pressure and inconsistency.

Nix doesn't have the extreme downfield accuracy but he was great with short and intermediate passes, but he had a great running game to rely on and he faced even less pressure than Penix. These two teams had two of the most effective OLs in the nation and Oregon may have been the best of the best. I don't know if either of these guys will translate well into the NFL.

Rattler dealt effectively with routine pressure but I'm not sure of him either. If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Rattler but I can't say I found his game tape hugely impressive. That's why I wouldn't take any of these guys in the first or second round. I'd take a flier in the third. If they're all gone by then, I'd try to find another QB with upside potential. We know Purdy was chosen last in the 7th. Such things are unusual but one needs to be smart with draft capital and I don't think any of these guys should go in the first because I see them all as long shots.

I see Rattler as most likely to stick around but I have no confidence he'll be a long-term starter.

2 ACL's is my concern too. I like him - BUT.......
I agree. The NFL is different, right? Linemen are the fastest guys you’ve seen in college. The hole collapses way faster.

I’d be ok if we picked him up…whatever pick #. That tells me JS approved.

But, I’d definitely ‘cringe’ quite a bit more when he’s sacked. A lot more….

At least you can admit it. And I get it to a point. One of the many reasons the Pac 12 was a joke was all the ridiculous late starts. 7 or 7:30 on the west coast. WTF?

That was certainly part of it. Starting a game at 10:30…

I also considered the level of talent in the Pac-12. It would be like watching Korean baseball vs MLB.

But, as we’ve seen in baseball, you can miss out on some tremendous talent if you don’t do your homework. Thats harder for the average fan to digest…but from a potential draftee perspective, it’s necessary!

I think that view of there being less talent in the Pac-12 is what upsets people. Look at how well the Pac-12 did this past year. Was perhaps the best conference in terms of talent. The style of play may be different but some of the commentators make it sound like it's not even football.

There were some great teams from coast to coast this last season. Certainly Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State. But I don't know that there was a tougher conference from top to bottom than the Pac-12 in its final rendition.

Controversial take incoming on Penix, but you know who he reminds me of in all ways except rushing prowess?

Colin Kaepernick.

The arm is a natural marvel, but there isn't much variation when it comes to throwing from different trajectories in their delivery, and there may be concerns with overall touch as both tend to lean towards fastballing their throws. They both misfire similarly when they DO misfire - usually too much mustard on the ball.

Not to say that means he's the same type of prospect or the same caliber of prospect as Kaepernick was. Just a parallel in their style of passing.

Kaepernick? No.

His decision making alone is MILES ahead of Klappersnatch. Plus, Kaep was a really fast runner, better runner than a QB in a lot of ways.
Another misconception on Penix. His accuracy is plenty good. He often had to throw the ball away.
Also, many games he would overthrow a guy early, and nearly EVERY TIME he would come back to the same guy with a ridiculous TD pass. His long ball accuracy is incredible. We would be sitting in the stands saying "Oh well, next drive he'll throw a TD on the same exact play"
It happened so often; we just expected it all the time. I'm not going down this rabbit hole again. Go Hawks. Go Penix.

If Penix had as good a career as Kaepernick, that wouldn't be bad. He was a high-level starter for a time. I've seen Penix throw with amazing touch. I've also seen times when he had trouble delivering the ball with finesse or accuracy. It's hard to know what was going on because the coaching staff was deadly silent about injuries. Odunze had a collapsed frickin' lung and they soft peddled it as "he's a little banged up".

Both Penix and Rome were tough as nails, and that's putting it mildly. Again, what people are missing, Penix does something that MANY can't do. He gets over it and comes right back and makes ridiculous throws. You have to have short term memory loss as a QB. There was another guy just like that in his prime, but I don't need to mention his name.........but people spent years denying his talent too. Killer instict, the ability to finish, no fear with the game on the line, extreme confidence when it counts. ALL things that Penix possesses.

Just sayin.
