I like what Pete brings to the table but with choices like this, I get why people are ready to move on from him. The Seahawks have never relied on one player as much as they do with Russ. If he ever goes down, they will lose the rest of thier games.

Or, you could say that he's a 3rd string sophmore quarterback who was thrown in against one of the league's best defenses (that went 11-0 to start the season) and had a nightmare 4 interception game, before having slightly more respectable game against the Packers in Lambeau (18/35 169yds 1-1 TD/INT), and then a fairly decent game against the Texans (26/38 304 yds 1-1 TD/INT), and shows some potential for future development as a backup QB

As opposed to 7 year veteran Mannion who has thrown less passes in those 7 years than Luton, and never shown any indication that he might be able to do anything significant at any level

Resources are scarce in the NFL and our roster is very top heavy. Can we agree that the rest of our roster would necessarily be worse if we spent our resources on a backup QB who would be anywhere close to as effective as Russ is?

Think about the ways in which we could win the Super Bowl this year. That's our best case scenario, and the most likely avenues for it occurring are where we are fortunate in close games and injury outcomes. If we get unlucky this season overall it's super unlikely that we are going to finish at the top. Does it really matter if a better backup QB means the difference between 5th best and 8th best team?

Moreover, none of this has to do with Jake Luton. Geno Smith is our 2021 clipboard holder who is expected to come in and look briefly competent in the event of a minor injury to Russ. Luton is a developmental QB who we are looking at for long-term upside and it's unlikely that he's going to play a single snap in 2021.

AgentDib, your post makes me wonder about our FO's philosophy. I could very well be wrong, and the idea--if held by PC or others--is easy to criticize. But perhaps the stock necessarily placed in one single player (the QB) for success and the hopes that said one, single player stays healthy is too much of a gamble to place all our eggs in that one basket.

Could it be that PC wants to create a scenario running the ball and later deeper shots that minimizes the role of the star QB? He wants to field a competitive team even if RW goes down. Again, this idea has much to criticize, and of course some things to agree with. But it would explain why the backup QB doesn't need to be RW in his prime to still have a chance at bringing a win. Post-season? Of course chances go down dramatically. But the competition goes up for even the best QBs.

I realize that in today's NFL, it's a QB-driven league, so I'm not advocating this position; just wondering at it's role Pete's thinking/philosophy.

They wouldn't put it like that exactly, but that's largely semantics. Pete would say that he wants Russ to lead the team as the star QB, but that an effective running game and defense puts Russ in the best situation to succeed. After all, Russ got a Super Bowl ring with Lynch and the LOB. They clearly do value Russ quite highly, or they could save a ton of money on his contract and trade him for a bushel of draft picks that would help them rebuild other areas.

Russ's game against Detroit in 2018 is the perfect example of a game plan that both minimizes the need for QB heroics but also leverages a superstar QB's ability: 14 for 17 for 248 yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs. That kind of play is easily worth $35m and is enabled by an effective running game. Pete would take that line all day over 28/49 for 420 and 3 TD/2 INT.

The main problem with going all in on Russ with no fallback is simply that we don't have our first round pick due to the Adams trade. Not having our first round pick is a large issue in my view because in the modern NFL that's a great way to mitigate a disastrous season. We are risking a decent amount this year and so hopefully Russ continues to stay healthy.

I have it on good authority that if Paul Allen was still alive today he would definitely be firing Pete & John over this debacle of biblical proportions. Just totally unacceptable.

Luton is the first Seahawks prospect at QB that's at all intriguing in a long time. He looks like an NFL qb.

I bet Pete pushed for him. He looks great in play action. And it's evident that he worked hard on his throwing mechanics since entering the league, which I love. They weren't good at OSU. They weren't Kaepernick-bad, but they weren't good. He still spreads his base too wide at the top of the drop, but that's correctable for someone that is willing to work on it.

He reminds me of Jared Goff a bit. Or a much bigger Jake Delhomme at times. Seems like he throws well on roll-outs for a big dude.

His small-area footwork (in the pocket) occasionally looks good, but can also go full SpazzleBeck. That needs a ton work. But qbs with good footwork under pressure in the pocket don't exactly grow on trees. Especially 6' 6" quarterbacks. It's hard to even think of examples of guys coming out of college in the past ten or even fifteen years that had this trait. Spread offenses have diminished this priority.

This is actually Wilson’s fault. There is too much money dedicated to the QB position that there isn't room for a quality back-up, let alone a 3rd string with any redeeming quality.
