I didn't get to see the 4th quarter yesterday - but just watched the highlights -
Did I actually see a jet sweep in the 2 minute drive to close the game?
Really? Grubb called some pre-snap motion AND a play to the sidelines/numbers instead of over the middle/up the gut?
Am I hallucinating? Is is my birthday?
Hell has officially frozen over
It was. And it did take 10 weeks to get to such a simple play.
Grubb is brilliant in some things and elementary in others.
So brilliant that i am pretty confident that if we had a top 5 line in the league, we would probably be leading the league in a whole batch of passing categories.
But we dont have a top 5 line, and he has yet to really adjust his playcalling or playcalling around the run to help that. But it WAS encouraging to see a handful more snaps from under center.
Its telling though when the announcers even describe our run game as basic and its obvious when yet again, we do dumb stuff like qb sneaking on 3rd and a long 1, and then run Charbs on 4th and an inch.
Its not hard to take some tome and look across the league at the plays other teams are running and incorporate them.
I think Grubb is just stuck on the passing and his comments last week confirm it. When asked whether he sees the need for more under center play, he responded that 'we are a shotgun offense and thats what we are going to be'.
I would feel better about that if we effectively leveraged and executed a creative under-center game, particularly on the ground.
Defenses will adjust to what we do through the air. The last 2 years we watched as secondaries gradually clamped down more and more and by season's end were all over our wr's. We have one of the most electric RBs in the league. We need to figure out a way to unlock that potential. To date, its been shown that trying to get it going from shotgun isnt getting it done.
At least the jet sweep is a sign that we can deploy other strategies to maybe get things going.
