It's somewhat amazing that the huge rookie contracts of yester year are still sending out shockwaves, but they are.

Well, 8 days from now we should all know.

Do you think we will get various FA moves announced on the actual day?
Absolutely. First, negotiations with unrestricted free agents can begin a couple days early, and second, the deadline is mid day March 10, 4 PM eastern IIRC. That doesn't mean Suh will know where he is going by then, but a few guys will know for sure.

Remember, the salary cap is rising at historic rates right now.

Nitpicking to follow ( :) ), but not true. It's the biggest jump since 2006, but nowhere close to a historic rate. Between 2005 and 2006 the cap went up by 20%.

If anything 2011 and 2012 were a brief flat cap era, whereas this is getting back to normal.

Good point, I forgot they can start officially talking a couple of days before!

It'll be an exciting day, that's for sure.

He actually is right and it is true. The cap is rising and has been rising by a great amount and will only keep increasing by large chunks, something that hasn't happened before...

The Lions announced they will not use the franchise tag on DT Ndamukong Suh.
Due to previous contract restructures, franchising Suh would have cost the Lions an unruly $26.7M. So now it's official: If there's no long-term deal with Detroit in place by March 10, Suh will hit the open market as the NFL's No. 1 free agent. He'll obviously command interest from cap-rich teams all over the league even though he wants to be the NFL's highest paid defender -- topping J.J. Watt's six-year, $100M extension that included $51.8M in guarantees. The Detroit Free Press speculates bidders will include the Lions, Jaguars, Jets, Colts and Raiders. Suh has been a top-4 tackle in PFF's grades in each of the last three seasons, anchored 2014's No. 2 overall defense and has missed just two games in his five-year caree

As many of us mentioned, this was a foregone conclusion, but now it's official.

Well anything can happen now. I still expect some team to throw a TON of money at him and lure him away.

I'm worried about Suh not being able to draw double coverage when he runs a slant route.

I'll clarify what I meant.

I'm going off of raw increases rather than percentages. It was only 21 years ago that the cap era began at $34.6 million. $34.6 million is probably what the Oakland A's were paying their players in 1994. So going by % growth is a bit misleading since the cap was ridiculously small at its inception and this would lead to huge % increases for small raises.

2006 and 2009 had massive outlier increases. $17 million and $13 million respectively. But the average of all other years from 1999 to the uncapped year in 2010 was a steady $5.5 million per year. When you include the outlier years, its roughly 7.5 million on average per year over that decade.

The cap is projected to rise $30 million from 2012 to 2016. It's not the biggest spike in growth ever, but it is the highest "consistent" growth, with every year averaging about $9 million, which is very impressive given the lack of outliers in this sample to raise the average.

Given the rapid brand growth the NFL has seen since the lockout ended, it is likely that his rate of cap increases will continue and that the 2010-2020 period will increase significantly more than the 2000-2010 period did.

Or to put it another way, the explosive cap growth of 2006 and 2009 did not result in continued growth from 2010-2012. But the steady high growth we've seen from 2013 to 2015 will very likely continue into the future and become "the new normal."
