I heard Dipoto on sports radio the morning after that press conference and he clarified his 54% comment. Over the last 55 years or so, there have been 29 teams that won at least 54% of their games every season for 10 straight years, and 26 of them played in the World Series. That number isn’t a target, that’s where the bar is set. It’s about sustained success.
Obviously I’m not satisfied just missing the playoffs and a second round exit for the last 3 seasons, but it beats the hell out of losing 90 games a season. The team has been competitive 3 years in a row, and the core of the team is still fairly young, there’s no reason we shouldn’t continue to be competitive moving forward. Hopefully we can add a few pieces and push this team into WS contention instead of just playoff contention. And there’s no way Dipoto is the one advocating for bargain bin shopping…if ownership told him he could increase payroll by $80m, does anybody really think he’d tell them no thanks?
