Mariners are likely to be linked to everyone now. We know that it will be the opposite of that. Raley, Garver and Palanco going pays the 18.5 for Naylz. If we shipped a pitcher more cash maybe. Loads of talent in the minors. The signing is awesome. I can't remember us having a 1st baseman of his ilk.

This is an amazing deal. The Mariners are getting a star at a good price. The only other really good first baseman available in free agency this year is Pete Alonso, and he's going to get $150 million over 5 years. (I don't put Ryan O'Hearn in the same category with Naylor and Alonso although I'm sure someone will overpay for him.)

Alonso is a really good player, but I'd rather have Josh Naylor. Alonso hits more HRs, but Naylor is better in other ways. Naylor hits for a higher average and strikes out a lot less. He had 83 strikeouts, compared too 172 for Alonso this year--less than half! Alonso's WAR is only slightly higher than Naylors, 5.6 to 5.4. Also, Naylor is 2 years younger than Alonso.

The question might be what salary can we find a way to dump without hurting us too bad, how much payroll increase do we get to work with, and how smart we are in spending whatever that number is to bring in a couple of higher OBP guys and round out the staff? We all know that we were lacking a few more savvy contact hitters who had a better feel for the strike zone.
I think Arozarena is probably gone and Castillo might be traded or gone too.

Got him at 19 mill a year. Wow.
Now go get Bichette and resign Polanco to be DH.
Sign Geno/Bregman/Makasuma for 3rd.
Then sign Tucker to a 1 year deal.
World series 2026 or bust.

Am I the only one who thinks if Geno walks elsewhere it is not a big deal?

Yeah, love the guy's enthusiasm and 30 homers is great, but is he really the best we can do at 3rd? IMHO his production last year was kind of meh.

50 Homer's is a very real impact on a pitching team like the Ms. I think of Nellie like production. Eugenios defense is improved. His throws to first very good. Geno would take 10 million.....Nellie made a career of 10 million dollar contracts. Seeing the hr numbers will probably get him paid though. Just say no to more than 10 a season. He strikes out too much and could actually shorten the lineup. Wiff 3x. Sit down.

He hit 13 HR after he was traded to the Mariners at the deadline in 2025. He hit 49 HR twice in his career. The rest of seasons he never got really close to 40. At best he's a 20-30 HR guy in his upper 30's age. I can take him or leave him myself. We need more contact hitters, not more HR/whiff guys.

I think Polanco comes back. They were still paying Mitch Hanniger last year as well.

Castillo is the intriguing one. He's on the down swing of his career but generally stays healthy and gives you 30 starts. His no trade clause is expired. I do think we make at least one trade given Dipotos history.

Agree on Polanco, though it wouldn't be a disaster if he doesn't. Would rather have Polo back than Geno. 🤷‍♂️

I suspect the Skubal talk is smoke. Seems doubtful the Tigers would let him go. Castillo as trade bait could draw some interest if we could get another good high average bat for him. While he isn't really the "ace" on the staff any more, he has been a rock as a solid, dependable arm in the middle of the rotation.

We have some intriguiging guys in the minors who will be pushing for room on the 40 and maybe even the 26, which makes this offseason interesting. Are any of those guys really ready for the show?

That would be interesting.

No, you're not the only one. I want higher OBP guys, contact hitters. But...I want a good replacement if he walks/we don't resign him. I want a plan.

I love Geno and will never forget his grand slam in game 5 of the ALCS. It was epic.

However, I think he's going to be too expensive for what he brings. The problem is that there aren't many other options.

Bo Bichette is a nice player, but he's expressed his preference to play shortstop, and he's a defensive liability. Plus he's projected to get over $200 million over 7 years and that's a bit steep I think for a guy who's missed a lot of games in the last three years. Bregman is the top third baseman free agent, but he's projected to get $150-160 million over 5 years. And he'll be 32 next year, meaning you'll be paying a hefty price through a couple of years when he's on the downside.

Too bad Colt Emerson's not ready. Last year he went from single A to AA to AAA, ending up with a .842 OPS with 16 HRs and 78 RBIs in 130 games. In limited ABs at Tacoma, he hit .364 with an OPS of 1.172.

I love Geno but please no. The HR's are nice, the defense is very nice but the HR or nothing approach is what kept us from being in the WS.
