Bingo.
I was completely baffled how anyone in the league was considering Lance in the 1st round, let alone the top 5! I celebrated the pick because Mac Jones would've been perfect for Kyle's system, and I knew there was a 90+% chance Lance would bust.
There were some tools and traits there that were obvious to being an NFL prospect. But he was a massive project. Like he needs to spend his entire rookie contract developing kind of project. But due to so few snaps at the amateur levels he needed to play. A catch-22.
He played little QB in high school, barely started in FCS. literally the least experienced QB to come into the league in my lifetime, probably ever. He needed/needs 4-6 years in the oven. Which can work as a late rounder, taking a flyer, see if it works out. Top 5? Insane.
49ers were/are trying to win now. It made no sense. Kyle has been exposed as someone who can't develop a QB as well. He mismanaged Lance the whole way. Kyle has a great system, probably the best. But he needs a readymade QB that already knows what they are doing. That is why Purdy succeeded. Purdy is smaller, has a limited arm, and was the last pick in the draft for a reason, but he started a ton in college and already knows how to play, he just needs/needed to learn the system.
If Purdy face-plants coming off of the injury, look for them to go get Kirk Cousins in the off-season, or some other veteran the can get their grubby mitts on. They won't be spending a 1st or 2nd rounder on a QB any time soon after this debacle.
