Actually the Seahawks likely will NOT get a 3rd round comp pick from Richardson. The roster has only 37 guys signed and at least 3 of them will be on PUP or retired to start the season. That leaves 19 roster spots that need to be filled with a good chunk of draft capital already traded away... Meaning, they are very likely going to have to spend in free agency, negating any comp picks they might be getting.
That could be another good reason to franchise Richardson for another season. Though I'm not sure they will target any high-priced free agents.
With what cap space?... Again, 19 guys + 10 practice squad guys (about $1.5 million) plus keeping 5-10 million during the season to sign players to replace injuries all on just $18,920,048? Fat chance. Some major restructures (kicking the can down the road) or big name players being cut would have to happen.
Also the injured guys can't be cut until they can pass a physical or else they are owed their full salary for the year... So that doesn't even free up money.
