General manager Mike Maccagnan would be hailed as a hero for trading away Richardson to Seattle for a 2018 second-round pick and wide receiver Jermaine Kearse nine days before the start of the season only to get the defensive lineman back after what amounted to a one-year rental.

With the money that we free up by not resigning him, we could go sign Tavaris Jackson. :stirthepot:

2nd rounder and Kearse for Sheldon that equaled no playoffs and a 3rd round comp pick?

Kearse as going to be cut anyway, and we had a massive hole at the DT slot. The Hawks filled that hole by getting the best DT available. They will get a 3rd round pick out of it. I still think it was a great trade.

Agreed that I still think it was a good trade and worth the shot. I always figured S Rich was a one year rental most likely.

I like the deal honestly as well, but ONLY if he is resigned.

It was a good trade at the time. Hindsight is 20/20. Richardson had a tremendous impact on Reed and Jones in making them better. Injuries to the DL have played a big part. I hope they find a way to keep Richardson. He's not the problem.

As much as I'd like to keep Richardson, some team will overpay for him, it's the way FA works........especially at a coveted position like DT.

I don't put anything in this article btw, it's what agents do. Float rumors like this to get the ball rolling on free agency hype. Richardson might be OK with going back to the Jets, but make no mistake, he's going to sign with whoever gives him the fattest paychecks.

This is his last big deal, he doesn't give a rat's ass what team writes the checks.

Let him walk. Bad trade that backfired IMO. We lose a draft position, and did not accomplish our goal with him. We also lost Kearse too, who at least had some trade value.

A bit telling he'd rather go back and play for the Jets also. We aren't everything that some claim we are here anymore.

Here is a link to the actual article.

What's the old saying, "absence makes the heart grow fonder?"

Richardson certainly didn't have any problems criticizing the Jet's organization and causing waves in the locker room while he was there. Now he longs to be back?

Doubtful. Again, this is his agent hyping up free agency making it known Richardson already has a suitor in the Jets, so you better come strong.

How close are the jets to the tampering line with this?

Now that is a very good question.

I'd bet money the author has zero sources whatsoever. Effectively, fake news.

The reason I ask is the Jets were hit with a 100 grand fine for tampering with Revis under similiar circumstances. Would be a shame to see them lose the draft pick we gave up as punishment. :sarcasm_off: The Author wouldnt think they were genius about then.

It's pretty funny that even with fake news like this the Jets GM would be praised when they are 5-9 right now and 6 of those losses have been extremely close. Fans slip easily into mentality of losing where wins in the current season are ignored in favor of draft picks and rookies in future years for the perpetual rebuilding project.

This deal has unfortunately gotten worse after the fact because the trade position Seattle gave up is getting better each week.

Now we may have given up a top 16-18 pick for a 3rd round end of the round pick. For a one-year player that is expensive. He should have been resigned as part of the trade.

With that said the best value out of this pick is the knowledge that our coaching staff completely failed to use a WR that is showing that he can play very good in this league. Kearse has 709 yards and 5 TDs this season for a mediocre team with a mediocre (at best) QB.......

Also got worse when our playoff chances went from 75% to 10% in two weeks.

We could hold our nose and bear this trade if we were rolling towards the playoffs and had a good chance at going deep. But now? Yeeeck.

Kearse is their number one option. So it’s not really a fair comp to do production straight up. Doug Baldwin is better than him and draws more targets on our team, period. Kearse, as a 2nd/3rd option for us was not worth the contract - his production in that role is marginally different than Lockett/richardson. Moving on from Kearse was smart. Paying middle of the road players, hurts cap and player development to stay just OK as a team.

Regarding the article, if he signs for under 10m and we get a weak comp pick then we will look like complete moron regardless of the team he goes to. Really don’t care if he goes to the Jets, just want to see him get paid (though I think he is undeserving of such a contract myself)

Agreed the article is trash. It only implies that he would entertain an offer, not that he's unhappy where he is.
