Jury is out still. I do worry about sunk costs if this was his learning season where we've taken the ups and downs and we fire him only for him to have adjusted at his next team. We saw what he could do when the o-line was functioning at UW
Line functioning is the key, ours has been a bad season of Rosanne all year.

My take:
The time to change was three weeks ago, if Grubb survived the season, he likely will be retained.

We might go deep into the playoff, despite of Grubbs, hard to fire your championship winning OC in that case.

If they somehow win a couple playoff games, won't that mean he deserves to stick around? He would be a part of winning those games, imo.

The thing that I hate is the 'earn while you learn' aspect of all of it.

Very true. But every coach in the history of the NFL was a rookie at some point.
Yea, no I get it but maybe your first gig is an assistant co-ordinator....

But then, I don't know much about the politics/players in the coaching world....

For sure, assistant for a year would have def. benefited him. He was VERY good in college; I don't think he just plain sucks and/or doesn't understand football. But he's def. not having a good first year overall.

What about a, "I don't know, but I would fire him" option?

Because I don't know what they'll do, but I would move on from him.

This thread is a little premature as there's still a whole lot left of this season. We still have 5 regular season games, nearly 30% of our schedule, left to play, plus the playoffs.

I don't like seeing us move on from any coach after just one season, especially when the entire staff was new. But on the flip side, Pete stuck with his OC's too long, especially Bevell, who should have been fired a week after SB 49. Loyalty is an admirable trait in a lot of situations, but not that one.

As far as what actually happens, IMO it depends on how much Macdonald was on board with the hire. If he was against it, I could see him lobbying for a change. My guess is that he stays.

In a lofty place tanglin' with Satan over history.

I just want to publicly applaud you for saying "a part" instead of "apart". Lately, there's been a whole slew of folks using "apart" wrong and it's starting to grind my gears.

Now, as for Grubb being retained, it kinda all depends on a few things. Like, we don't really know how much of a curve MM is grading him on. Also, what if JS and MM plan on moving on from Geno and want to see what RG does with an entirely different QB and more continuity on the line? Those are just a few of the potential deciding factors coach and JS are considering. Me, personally? Like someone said up thread, I wouldn't really be mad to see him go.

Good heavens. We are 12 games in and there are tar and feathers out for Grubb. As I mentioned upthread, he has not be Eberflus-esque so I don't see any reason to get rid of him yet. I think he definitely needs to finish this season and the next before deciding if we railroad him out of town. JMHO

I said yes but with how easily Macdonald and Schneider have handed players their walking papers this season so far, I'm not sure I'm 100% on Grubb's safety.

That said, I don't think it's fair to judge Grubb as a first year OC under a first time HC. Everyone should have expected growing pains. Grubb has continued to make adjustments and is showing to some degree that he's willing to adjust. Our gameplan last week was not our typical gameplan at all. It wasn't always the best gameplan, but our overall offensive efficiency was actually higher than our average for the year.

If you can look past that incredibly frustrating goal line stand, there is some good stuff there. (Also, I didn't realize this until just a few minutes ago, but going into this game, having Geno throw from shotgun on 3rd/4th and short has actually been more successful for us this season than running the ball in those same situations, so maybe it wasn't as bad of a call as I expressed to my wife repeatedly during the game... just don't tell her that.)

I just think if you brought Grubb here, knowing he's a college OC with no NFL experience, you have to have been willing to let him get a season under his belt before you decide whether he can't hack it at the NFL level.

I like that term: Eberflus-esque. You need to take out a patent on it.

Seems RG's offense has a lot of promising flashes of creativity, and the formations seem intricate, but to me it's been anything but consistent.

I'm not sure if its just my absolute love for beast mode era ground n pound, or me personally thinking running the ball is key to sustained success on offense, but this whole pass first offense is not growing on me.

I don't think we have the WR corps to be that type of offense and DK is so underwhelming when it comes to being a dominate possession receiver(especially redzone smh).

Maybe it's just a lack of trust the coaches have in the OL to be confident running the ball more?

I want to see us bang out more rushes, need to stop wasting K9s ability. He had some long TD rushes earlier in the year and I need to see that more....

Put me in the I’m surprised this is a thread category.

Not too surprising when you consider the way we are here.
Just like draft picks, we dig our heels in once we've decided something and we stick to it

There is no way we can judge the guy fairly when the oline has played the way it has.
He has a brilliant offensive mind. Will it translate at the NFL level? Jury is still out

But as others have said, it sure would suck to blame him, fire him and then have him walk away and be brilliant elsewhere
