I think the two unanswered questions are: (1) Is Macdonald the defensive genius that people think he is? and (2) Is Ryan Grubb the real deal as the offensive coordinator?
I like that we hired a defensive head coach who might be able to stop McVay and Shanahan's offenses. That's a tall order, but the Ravens beat both the 49ers and the Rams last year. The Rams did score 31 points against Macdonald's defense, but the Ravens beat the 49ers, 33-19, and intercepted Brock Purdy 4 times. The Ravens managed to keep a lot of good offenses to single digits, including the Seahawks (37-3), Lions (38-6), Texans (25-9), Browns (28-3), and Jaguars (23-7).
Before the last college football season, PFF ranked Grubb as the nation's No. 2 "offensive genius."
https://www.si.com/college/washington/football/pff-ranks-grubb-as-nations-no-2-offensive-genius In 2022, the Huskies averaged 39.7 points per game and 515.8 yards per game. In 2023, they averaged 38 points per game and 462.1 yards per game. Those are some eye-popping numbers. Was it all Penix and Odunze? Or DeBoer? Or was Grubb responsible for the last two years?
So a lot of unanswered questions, but lots of reasons to be optimistic, too.
