Stafford's just tough to beat. He knows how to shift protections, he and his receivers run the toughest routes in the league and are able to get the ball out, and he knows what to do when his receivers get a free release. That all plays into pass protection. His offensive line is better than Darnold's (significantly), his tight ends are the equal of ours (we trained Parkinson too well), and their backs can pick up blitzes.

And yet we won because Darnold kicked ass.

Lots of food for thought in this thread. It was clear though that with the exception of the one sack got by Lawrence they just couldn’t get to Stafford and he had far too long to find open guys. Beside that Stafford is just a damn good QB. The rest of the D did an awesome job limiting the RAC gains. That said the Rams exploited size differences with physicality against our two smaller CBs

To me the critical needs for success against the Rams is to improve the pass rush. Finding that key guy like Maxx Crosby or whomever that isn’t just one dimensional along with other dominant CBs will be the solution. Witherspoon though picked on still had 2 key PBUs when it counted. I really believe Witherspoon had a bad game relative to what is usual for him, normally he is a very dominant player.

Morris might have some additional insight based on familiarity. But I think the key differences in the Falcons game was the 3 turnovers, and the 3 sacks. They were able to generate pressure which forced Stafford into making mistakes.

So bottom line, I think it still comes down to pressure, and not necessarily an exotic scheme.
Right...not suggesting anything exotic. But he knows how to generate pressure...likely due to familiarity.

I’m hoping we draft an LB with A+ athleticism and a high football IQ. Look what Drake Thomas is doing with just a high IQ. I agree with those who want to trade for or sign a defensive lineman with proven ability to get pressure every snap. I also think we need a rookie lineman akin to Zabel to cement our offense. The future looks bright if we make the right moves

We have 2 weeks off and I can't help think about next season a bit. For as dominant as our D has been...we had considerable struggles against the lambs the past 2 games. How do we counter that next year?

Our D allows a soft middle, but it's hard to win games on dinks and dunks. The lambs are the team with the abiliity to hit explosives on our D.

I'd love to see MM bring Raheem Morris on in some capacity, assuming they could align philosophically. Morris's D impressed me against the lambs this year.

Just something to think about.
I agree. The soft middle killed us and that's the only weakness on this D. Bringing in Morris or someone else would be a benefit

I think corner will be the biggest position of need, unless we can retain Jobe or Woolen, or sign a FA.

They also owe Sammy D a bounce-back performance as well.

Sam picked the Defense up against the Rams and now it's their turn to return the favor and crush Drake Maye in 2 weeks. :devilish:
No offence sir...but I don't think the D "owes" Sam anything. Glad Sammy put his big boy pants on, but the D bailed him out quite a few times this season.

Just sayin'.

Trevon Diggs on a 1 year prove it deal. When healthy he’s a hell of a player

Edit: Jamel Dean is a free agent, I’d much rather have him

I don't think he fits into our culture, which is big with JS/MM. It's something you always have to consider with these guys.

Yes they did (not going to deny that) but let me fire back at you with :

That was the regular season where they bailed him out.

This was the PLAYOFFS where there was no tomorrow had they lost this game.

The Defense did not play their best game and even had a horrific gaffe that would've cost them a chance to go to the SuperBowl.

The bottom line is that Sam saved their asses in this one so yeah...they do owe him, Fernie.

And they will repay him by destroying Maye on Superbowl Sunday. 💪😤

I'm sure glad the team doesn't seem to operate the way you guys think they do. :)
