I wasn't a fan of him last year and although I don't know his salary/contract I wouldn't have cared if the Seahawks got rid of him over the off season. Today #68 got beat multiple times! I feel like Carolina has a top 10 d line easy so I'll give them credit. Still our O line needs to protect better it's apparent after 1 game.

But didn't Breno, the "flag magnet" draw a penalty from the other guy? Who got ejected?

:)

Lets focus on the true weaknesses which would be the guards

O-line had a tough assignment today. 10 AM start on the road against what appears to be a very good front seven with Carolina.

With that said...I was hoping for some better play.

Breno definitely botched a few plays early on. He must have done better in the second half because I didn't notice him anymore.

If there was anyone on the line I would boot off it would be Carp. He looked like a slug. drop 100 pounds and come back dude

On the sack-and-fumble by Wilson, it looked like Breno was trying to jitterbug with his assignment rather than jolt him significantly. I won't pretend that the O-line was guilt-free today.

it's time to address the o-line this offseason, Cable can only do so much

The OL was brutal this game. Yes, the Panthers have a great front 7. It doesn't get any easier next week. The 49ers have just as good or better front 7 than the Panthers plus 49ers have a better secondary. The OL has to improve drastically next week. I'm extremely unimpressed with Sweezy. It may be time to pull the plug on that experiment. I think moving McQuistan or inserting Bailey there would be better.

Stated in another thread that Carp was probably in the worst case situation, hardly practiced at all, I know he was doing conditioning coming back from injury but got hurt again and was sidelined. Go into high heat high humidity area and play. He was obviously gassed and rusty as well as going up some really good players.

The knock has been his conditioning, we didn't play to his strength either and thats the run game. I would think that over the next week or two we will see better play if he doesn't have nics again.

I'm not that worried about Sun night. The O will be half a step faster off the snap than today.

Ditto, I was more worried about this game than san fran. I don't think we're losing our home opener, we'll run the ball much better next week, it isn't going to be 42-13 but we will win

Carp is the weak link, I call BS on that. McQuinton is horrible, i saw him on his backside at least 3 times. Sweezy isn't that much better. Breno has his moments, but I'd get rid of the other two before Carp. Okung had some bad snaps as well.

This is how we started last season, they got better each game. Give it some time, at least we're already better than this time last season, penalty wise. Carolina front 7 is no joke, give credit where credit is due.

Watching Sweezey, he does make some interesting plays. One moment he blocked with his back to the d-lineman then looked back at the pocket to run and block another
player. I thought it was a dynamic move- other times he runs straight up the field and doesn't touch any defenders. McQuiston got pancaked at least one time. Some guys are too fast for Breno: they run around him.

I agree we should get away from the conversion projects and get serious about building the oline. We should acquire some proven talent. There is more expense but less risk.

We sure need better O-line play against the 9ers than what we saw today, for sure. Carp just looks exhausted every time I see him. I like Breno a lot more now than I used to tho...As long as he can keep the penalties to a minimum. I think it's time to call Carp a big fat bust. Fat being the operative word there.

It's really a simple problem for our O-line, they just aren't very talented (excluding Okung and Unger). The two fairly recent high draft picks that were brought in to become future starters this year, are both below sub-par and one is gone. I think next season we will see a few free-agents brought in during the off-season, if we have any money left. If not, I figure they will go a ahead a draft one or even two in the first four rounds. I just hope this year the O-line as a group can improve steadily through out the year. At home it's not such an issue, but the road games is where we need their A game. Today we got a C- or worse performance from them.

I'm not going to say there aren't issues, like the coaches undervaluing pass blocking over and over again, but this unit was more than decent the second half of last year. The run game will get going. Of that I have no doubt. They were trying multiple new running formations, like lining up a TE at fullback, plus a ton of early runs came out of shotgun, which I know they want to do this year. I'm not as big a fan of that as they seem to be, but the coaches are definitely trying it out to see how it fits. So we ran into a good d line and didn't find our groove. That's where I think we are right now.

I've been a Carp supporter, but man does he look slow this year. I noticed in preseason he wasn't getting to the LBs at the second level. He's fine at the point of attack, but if he can't combo block to the LBs or cut off the backside pursuit I don't know how you play him. There are definitely some questions at guard.
