About our seemingly complete lack of ability to stop the run? (even on my 1/2 fast forward of the 2nd half viewing yesterday)

Not to look past Atlanta - but the Lions with their run game are scaring the crap out of me. They looked good on the ground yesterday - although my view could be RedZone skewed.

Couple that with the fact that not only can't we stop the run, but we seemingly can't tackle at the LOS - well, it's a bit worrysome.

Hope the boys get on it. The 3-4 ain't lookin so magical now. Need to bring some people into the box!

Yes, it is concerning for sure.

D Taylor seems to continue to rush way upfield and open huge running lanes on his side. The linebackers can't seem to get off blocks, and the DBs don't wrap up. It's an all around team effort.

Perhaps Clint Hurt could've spent less time bad mouthing Ken Norton after his departure and more time coaching the guys how to fill their gaps and tackle. It's a young team though, I'm sure they'll learn

Yes it's a definite concern and was all through preseason. I figured there'd be some growing pains with the switch to the new 3-4 scheme so hopefully that's all it is and they'll right the ship in the near future.

As far as the poor tackling, that's a big surprise as PC coached teams have always excelled at that. Kind of strange.

Not going to overreact to this weeks loss. SF is a top Defense and Running team in the league. Atlanta and Detroit will be more our level as we are just getting some young players the reps. I'll be concerned if the next few weeks we have major Defensive letdowns

Yes, I am worried about what seems to be consistently bad run stopping.

Seattle seems to get gashed at will by the opposing offense.

Gap containment is not there and it seems like the approach to getting to the QB has put a hamper on stopping the run by closing off running lanes.

Seattle cannot seem to do both. Alot of it seems to be situational play calling correctly by Clint Hurtt.

So far it has not worked out for him and stopping the run is and always has been the first thing for Carroll on defense.

I gotta say this, since I never see it mentioned.

The tackling issues aren't new. It's been a problem for (at least) the first half dozen games of the season over the past few years. It's easy to overlook that, because they've tended to tighten up as the season went along, but it qualifies as a persistent problem at this point.

The rule changes about contact in practice seem to have had more of a negative impact on Seattle than on many other teams.

Good tackling is what we seem to be missing here. If we were wrapping guys up better, our defense would actually look good against the run. Right now, we can't tackle our way out of a wet paper bag and that HAS to improve. No amount of talent in the world can win games if you can't tackle consistently.

Also, this may be a bad take, but here goes.

It seems like our team in general, from the defense as a whole, to the O line, seems physically weaker than other teams. They're always getting pushed around. A lot of getting a good tackle is form and positioning, true, but there were instances yesterday where the scrum was getting pushed the wrong way, or Deebo was just dragging defenders and shedding people like they were fleas.

It seems like our strength and conditioning has always been below average the past 7+ seasons. Idk who Carroll has doing that. Our current strength and conditioning coach is named Ivan Lewis and he's been doing it since 2019.

Again, just an amateur analysis by me. I know any of these dudes would throw me through a brick wall, but compared to other teams it seems like a glaring weakness. Overall physical...weakness.

I don't know if I agree with this. I saw Al Woods just man handling his opponents many times Sunday. Strength wasn't an issue here.

I also saw at least one of our Illegal man downfield penalties called on an offensive lineman who had basically manhandled the defender back at least 5 yards.

If that's the case, dude should be replaced - I 'have' to think that strength and conditioning is one of the easier slots to fill/replace.

We have a young team, except for the super freaks most rookies are not as filled out as vets are.

This is a new scheme, for everyone.

Offense has me a touch worried, but they're young in key spots too, and talented, we need the run game to get rolling very soon, I'm for giving #9 more touches, as well as putting DK in the backfield with sweeps, ect. Never let DJ throw a football again.

Yes I remember that post too. I can't remember the poster, but Ivan Lewis' only other previous experience was with USC from 2014-2018. They also had injury issues there and struggled.

I don't know if I agree with this. I saw Al Woods just man handling his opponents many times Sunday. Strength wasn't an issue here.

I also saw at least one of our Illegal man downfield penalties called on an offensive lineman who had basically manhandled the defender back at least 5 yards.

This. That was Abe Lucas who put his man on ice skates and had him halfway up the 101 to San Fran by the time the pass came out. It was literally too good of a block and we caught a penalty for it.

Al Woods is a double team sponge and he STILL lives in the opponents backfield. The struggle appears to be at the second level. Both Barton and Brooks need to take better angles, better work through the wash, and finish the tackle at the point of attack. Darrell Taylor needs to work on setting a better edge as well. He's so athletic and eager that he's rushing upfield a yard or two too far, which is leading to some cutback lanes. All these things are on film. And they are all coachable. I expect to see growth and improvement in this area.

Also do not undersell the impact of not having Jamal Adams out there. I know it doesn't fit the whipping boy narrative, but that dude is a heat seeking missle and this defense was miles better with him than without.

Seemed to be more than a few frustrating plays yesterday like that big run by Samuel where they had it initially diagnosed but were unable to finish the play.

I do think our interior D line needs improving. We can't stop a QB sneak, ever.
