A big reason why the Patriots snuck up on the Bengals was because people assumed the Pats OL would be one of the worst in the NFL. On paper that seems to be case along with lack of playing time together as a cohesive unit. But what happened in reality is that the Pats OL looked more than competent on the ground. The Pats OL in week 1 showed power and bullied a Bengals defensive front in the run game. Mayo's Patriots really came out with a physical game plan.

Alex Van Pelt understands that his tackles are not the best in pass pro which is why they will not really rely on long developing plays. Also from the ground game they will use play action to involve Hooper and Henry to keep the chains moving.

The WR's for Patriots are very ordinary but they make up for it with diverse skill sets. D. Douglas with shake and bake and then you have Baker using his size to be deceptively fast as a rookie. Polk is very polished WR while Thornton and Boutte have their moments where they can really separate. Osborn is a vet that understands the game well but he isn't going to dominate a game.

Rhamondre Stevenson relies on missed/broken tackles for extra yardage and he is deceptively good as a pass receiver. And Alex Van Pelt will use Antonio Gibson to cause mismatches in the flat and perimeter to test the Hawks LBs in pass defense.

Defensively the Patriots are a tough unit to run on and they play with a lot of discipline. They may not have Judon or Barimore playing but White is going to be a handful as his size and speed combo is going to test the Hawks.

Jonathan Jones and Gonzalez are a tough boundary CB duo and with Marcus Jones the nickel that will be a challenge. This is because the Patriots may force coverage sacks as they rotate their safeties very well with Pappers, Duggar and Hawkins.

The key to the game for the Hawks is the following:

On offense, the Hawks OL has to own the LOS to create push in the run game. Without a run game it makes it hard to beat the Pats with a pure passing offense as their secondary is the strength of their team like it was last season. Furthermore, Keion White is savage with his size and speed and will be a problem if he is allowed to tee off.

Geno Smith must also identify the high safety pre snap on every down as it could be Duggar, Hawkins or Peppers.

Lockett, JS or Metcalf in the slot may be a good matchup against Marcus Jones because of size mismatch.

The Patriots do have a weakness on defense and that is their LB's while faster than a few years ago are still not really sideline to sideline trail blazers. This is where Charbonnet and McIntosh can really feast as a mismatch.

Defensively, the Seahawks front seven has to really stop the Patriots powerful OL from controlling the LOS. If they can do that the Seahawks secondary is more than talented enough to neutralize the Patriots WR group along with the defensive scheme. And pressures from Mafe and others will be crucial to force Brissett into a dink and dunk game where the Patriots lose momentum on drives. Tackling is a must against players like Stevenson, Henry and Hooper as they can turn a five yard catch into 20+ yards easily from broken tackles.

If the Patriots run game is very underwhelming and their passing game lacks explosiveness I think the Seahawks can pull away with the win as Seattle offense can eventually wear out a very talented defense.

Awesome summary. I personally know zero about the Pats, so this is incredibly helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

Thanks for the write up. Sounds like they are almost a mirror image of our Seahawks. Let's hope we get 2d half offense from last week and not 1st half, and a little sooner in the game.

I'll add this which i thought was interesting:

I never figured Brissett to be the type to be able to excel under pressure but that's exactly what he did last week.

It could be that the Pats simply schemed a solid short game passing attack in anticipation of the Bengals bringing heat on a journeyman qb. When you look at Brissetts numbers under pressure in 2022, he was 20th over his season with Cleveland. So there's evidence that his perfomance and his Oline's last week were more a product of catching Cincy off guard than NE starting a trend of borderline elite QB and O line play in terms of getting the ball out quickly in '24 .

Alex Van Pelt is very adaptable based on which QB he has to work with as he showed last season with Cleveland. So yeah he knows how to work with Brissett's best and Mayo is also cognizant of what Brisssett can do with his stint in NE earlier in his career.

In many ways they are mirror images of the Hawks. A roster that became depleted because of missed late first round picks/constant trade downs/trading away for veteran stop gaps that don't work out. But I think the talent depletion of the Patriots is more extreme because they have had talented players they have found but they let them walk away or their scheme was very inflexible. In comparison, the Seahawks quickly pivoted their draft strategy the last few years along with the RW trade haul. That is why on paper the Hawks are a more talented team than the Pats but that would be misleading as you still have to play the game.

And the Patriots have veterans that have played in that scheme for years and HC Mayo understands that week to week you have to change your defensive identity to be tailored against your opponent which is why the Patriots may show different fronts like 43, 34 or even bear fronts. Their front seven players are very interchangeable in what they can do like K. White can play LDE in a 43 to set the edge or be an OLB elephant in a 34. D. Wise is also a tweener as he can kick inside on passing downs too. A. Jenninsg is a classic big bodied off ball SAM LB but he can also line up at the line to set the edge against the run.

The Patriots are definitely not an explosive team on offense and if the Hawks can score early and control the LOS the Patriots will wear out eventually. But if the score is close and low scoring the Patriots are built to slug it out though. Still, a good test for the Hawks OL as that is a tough front seven to run on as they are very disciplined hitting their gaps and assignments. Hawks defensive front seven on paper should dominate the Patriots OL. However, the Pats OL features players that play with power like Onwenu and the rookie Robinson.

If we can maintain balance on O and keep tackling like we did last week, we’ll win this matchup.

Love the chance at 10 AM, cross-country vs. a career backup to prove McDonald’s Seahawks are truly a cut above what we’ve seen in the post LOB era.

We better block Keon white. And Wise Jr or they will wreck our offensive line.

One stat that jumped out at me was how Stevenson ran for 120 yards with 118 of those (98%) after contact. I think if we can tackle like we did in week 1 we can put a significant dent in that number.

Also i think this gives us a real chance to do a lot when it comes to pressuring the QB and perhaps getting a few extra sacks.

Mafe for certain had an off day. I think he missed a few which may have gashed us for some serious yardage. He certainly had some nice tackles as well, but more work still to be done.

As a team we had a lot of missed tackles behind the LOS. We have to do better. That said, we came out with a W and that’s what’s important.
