Geno isn't going anywhere. We're stuck with him for one more season and that big contract you think is on the horizon for him is never going to happen. Nobody is going to give a 36 year old QB that hasen't done anything in his career a big, multi year contract. After next season, Seattle might give him another one year deal on the cheap if they are truly building everything else up and looking for another QB somewhere.

Lock, Darnold, and Fields aren't the answer either. Lock had one good game, Darnold had a great year, but has all the pieces in Minnesota that Seattle doesn't, and Fields can only run the ball and is a horrible passer. All three are fools gold and I feel sorry for the team that's going to grossly over pay for Darnold.
STUCK is a very accurate word. Sigh

I can't believe that the moderators let a thread like this last. How about a dose of reality once in a while?

Nobody is saying Howell is good or better. NOBODY. Nor do I see many people calling for Howell to start on Sunday. Hell no.

Geno is average. Nothing more.

Sam Howell, the favorite of .net, will rescue guys like you from Geno. Schneider and our young head coach traded for Sam and hired a college OC just to coach Howell up. Howell is ready.
Howell had a chance to show off his abilities in the Greenbay game and he didn't. 5-14 for 24 yards, 0 TD's and a pick. Horrible.

See: Drew Brees, 2004, San Diego Chargers.
You can’t really compare Brees and Darnold as apples to apples. Brees was good throughout his time with the Chargers but his injury made the Chargers hesitant and they moved on from Brees. Darnold, statistically, has only had one great year, this season.

If the Vikings feel Darnold is top 5 QB money, then, so be it, but at some point, they drafted a guy to be the future or at least figure that he can be one immediately. Why spend all that money on what could be a one year wonder in Darnold and be in cap hell than give a rookie deal QB that has talent cause that’s why he was drafted instead???

I would take my chances with McCarthy or pay Darnold for a max 2 years but Darnold’s camp will likely want 3 or 4 years instead of just 2….

I wouldn’t give Darnold more than another 2 years cause by then McCarthy will have 3 years on his rookie deal and be eligible for an extension should he play in 2027.

Just need more touches, lol
If he were Drake Maye or Michael Penix I would agree but he had a whole season last year as a starter. He knows what it takes to be that. As a backup aspiring to be the starter you have to prepare like the starter and be ready to go in at a moments notice and take the starting job away from the incumbent. If you don't that's on you.

Lol, Brees was ASS in his first 3 years in SD. Changing history much?

Brees didn't start playing great until they traded for Philip Rivers.

Darnold is a great comparison. His early numbers in NY were actually BETTER than early Brees.

This is most unlikely, even if the Viking bite the bullet and pay Darnold, no reason not to keep JJ on his rookie contract.
He said it, they only have 3 picks in the upcoming draft.

The Vikings are more like to keep McCarthy and let Darnold walk than trade him. If they can make Darnold look as good as he has, then they likely believe they can get good play out of McCarthy on a cheaper contract.

Maybe McCarthy doesn't put up the same numbers in his first year as Darnold, but if he can manage the game well enough to have them in contention year in & year out, then like I said, I think they're confident enough in the coaching staff to bet on McCarthy.

Let Darnold walk?

They have a QB guru at coach and you get 4 more years of cheap QB money to build the rest of the team up. I’d be shocked if they trade him but Seattle would be interested for sure.

Why do you assume this? Darnold is an impending FA. The QB franchise tag is expected to be around $41M. Why would you tag your bridge QB when your QBOTF is already on the roster? Is Darnold worth $41M, and if so does he have trade value at that price? Logically a team that doesn't have a QB will likely be willing to pay more than a team that already has a QB. If Darnold isn't worth the tag price he's likely to sign with a team that offers him long-term guarantees, (which won't be the Vikings).
Cheers for this info.

It was my ignorance as I didn't know the franchise tag was around $41.

That's an insane amount of money.
