The weird thing is that, presumably, Payton came out of retirement for the opportunity to coach a presumed star. Now that he's pushed Wilson out, what's his motivation to stay in Denver?

It was known before the hire and proven since that Payton had a choice between Arizona and Denver and wasn't crazy about either because he didn't like the idea of either Wilson or Murray as his QB.

Payton wanted control, Denver after last year was desperate to find a fix, and someone that presumably could fix Wilson. Payton fixed it. Stidham was hand picked by Payton and kept a low profile. Payton had this in his hip pocket starting in Pre season, why he went after him so quick.

There is nothing wrong with Payton, he's the same guy as always
but not just anyone can run his offense and when they can't he
dumps them.
Turns out not even Drew Brees can run his offense consistently. Once upon a time, someone on this site said that Russell Wilson couldn't hold Brees' jock strap.
And yet, even after winning one SB with this all-time great QB, SP had a stretch of 7 and 9 seasons.

He will be on the hot seat if he has a losing record next year.

This is indeed weird, Wilson is Wilson, his strengths and weaknesses, ought to be known to Payton before he took the job.

By pushing Wilson out, any failures in the future will be squarely in Payton. How can he be so sure that he will sign and draft a franchise QB and win a Superbowl during his tenure?

Payton came out of retirement because the Broncos offered him close to 100M over five years. I doubt Russ played a big part in his decision.

He probably went into the season expecting to move on from Russ if it didn't work this season. And look, if it's evident to us, it's obvious to Payton: The offense required for Russ to succeed is a power running / horizontal passing offense with low-probability shots down the field. It would be crazy to invest in that style of offense with a declining QB when you are not built to win now.

Drew ran it just fine but the Saints D went into a decline likely due
to cap numbers after having to pay Brees and others.

Wilson is nowhere near a Drew Brees level of a QB are you kidding?

Yeah Drew ran Sean's offense just fine. Racked up lots of TDs too.

It was Bree's cap # that killed the team. NOLA couldn't keep the roster stocked via good drafting, which they didn't do well enough to keep the talent level across the board at a high enough level.

The Saints were one of the all-time worst officiating calls away from being in their 2nd Super Bowl. Your expectations might be too high if you think Payton underperformed in NO.

Who said he underperformed? I just posed the question if he was overrated and rode the Brees train. Good coach, but let's see what he does w/out Brees.

This article is pretty good if you want to know how Sean Payton operates.

Excellent read, and probably an accurate breakdown of what's going on in donkey land.
