Why care if Pete isn't around.

Some people are just all up in all the details with speculation 24/7.

Some people miss the dude to some extent.

I think some people might be struggling to make an adjustment. They spent years laser focused on this dude with ire and his departure was a bit sudden. Now what are they supposed to be mad at? There aren't even coordinators to be scapegoating.
