Age is a risk factor, but probably not an independent risk factor.

It is a risk factor because the older one is, the more "conditions" one tends to accumulate.

The 70-year-olds that are active back country skiers, who's bodies are conditioned to go uphill, with sustained heart rates in the 160s to 170s, with high VO2s and very low PAO2s, are much more likely to tolerate the Covid insult than your average 30 to 40-year-old, who's exercise regimen exists of 12 oz curls, and who gets short of breath getting up to change the TV channel.

There are a lot of NFL staff in the latter category, but I wouldn't put Pete in that category.

I have some news Doc.

Nobody gets up to change the TV channel since 1985.

How do you know Pete Carroll's health? Carroll could have health issues that we don't know about. At his age that would be unsurprising. Everyone here is speculating on information that quite frankly none of us know.

The more realistic prognosis is that the NFL 2020 season is cancelled or postponed and nobody coaches. It happened to the NBA, MLB and if things don't get under control come fall we could see no football in 2020.

I think you have it exactly backward. The people who are saying Pete is at an elevated risk are the ones who, probably unknowingly, are making presumptions about his health issues.

I'm pointing out that we don't actually know that age is an independent risk factor. Likely, it isn't. It is probably a risk marker due to its association with actual risk factors.

We do know that Pete doesn't have two of the big ones, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Could he have hypertension and diabetes? Possibly, but his healthy lifestyle makes it less likely. He clearly has a level of fitness well above the average. Hell, he probably does 3 mets of activity just from gum chewing.

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say he probably has the risk of someone in their 40's, and I think it is safe to say that there are many NFL coaches and staff who carry a much higher risk.

It’s not an age causation thing as much as a comorbidity with other conditions.

Age is a correlation because we tend to acquire conditions over time. I suppose you can argue advanced age means less vitality to aid recovery, but doesn’t seem to be a primary factor.

Yeah comorbidity !!

   Always good to get a laugh!

We don't know Carroll's medical history.

We don't know how this disease impacts people based on their medical history. We have some correlative data on age groups and risk factors, but when it comes to real science and data, we don't know.

In general is we have enormous knowledge gaps regarding this virus/disease. Trying to apply that crappy knowledge to some dude who we know nothing about other than what we can observe on a TV screen is kind of ridiculous.
