Last year, I advocated to keep him for 2 reasons: One, his cap hit if cut was $9m, and two, he has a really weird history of alternating good and bad years. He's usually good in even years and bad in odd years. He now would only cost $1.8m if cut after June 1st, and we're coming into his traditional down year. I think at the very least, it's time to bring in some young, hungry competition at kicker. Houston cut an undrafted Jake Bates. The Cowboys picked up Brandon Aubrey from the USFL scrap heap. No reason we can't find someone better and younger than Myers without expending draft capital like those idiots in Santa Clara.

It really is weird about his history. I like the idea of bringing in a cheap guy for competition. May snag a keeper and save some money

If we can find a less expensive, capable replacement...then all for it. JM is due a butt load of $$ for a kicker.

That being said, we have history of kicker experiments that cost us several games...so the replacement needs to be solid.

We could change the philosophy to go for it inside FG range...wait...our OL...nevermind.

Ever since we cut Norm Johnson for missing a single extra point in a playoff game and he went on to have a great career for the Falcons, Steelers (puke) and the Eagles for another 9 years while we struggled through bum after bum, I'm weary of letting a known commodity go. I get it, save money and find a suitable replacement. But having a weak kicking game is one of the worst curses a football team can have and you don't realize it until it's haunting you every single field goal attempt.

The kicker position is so underrated, its sick. They historically score more points than any player and if it's all about winning, scoring is vital! Go out and get the best kicker in College, I don't care if it's a 2nd round pick or 4th. Snag the bro and lock in a couple extra wins every year, for the next 20 years!

I loved Norm, I never knew that was why he was cut.

Well put.

I've been pretty critical of Myers at times and I've probably made more comments complaining about this team's absolute refusal to bring in ANY competition for him (we'd be by far the worst team in the league if they deferred to me on even a quarter of team decisions, but damn if I wasn't beating the drum hard for Cameron Dicker a few years ago) than every other regular poster on here combined, but Myers has been absolute nails the past few years. I've hit a point where I'm done questioning him. I'm certainly not cutting him until he gets beat by someone.

Interesting thing about Myers too: if he's still out kicker next season, he will almost definitely become the franchise's all-time leading scorer by the end of November. He passed Alexander for third last season, is just 38 behind Hauschka for second, and 89 back of Norm Johnson for first in team history.

I don't really feel like the difference in savings between Myers contract and a UDFA is going to be what allows us to sign some important piece of the puzzle to where I'd be willing to risk Jason's rather stable production, for like $2M in cap space?

Bring someone in to compete in training camp, yeah. But I don't think anyone should feel any real urgency to release Myers unless they actually have someone that they like better.
