"True to the Blue". What does that mean? As an organization, the Mariners have not established a winning tradition.
"Blue" does not evoke memories of post-season success. Aside from the '95 season, one trip to ALCS and 0 World Series is not a heritage of success. Does it mean "prepare yourselves for another mediocre season?" " We are in fact the Same old Mariners". "Keep showing up for free shirts and bomber hats and bobbleheads, but put any thoughts of winning a World Championship out of your mind".
Don't get me wrong - I want them to succeed . Safeco Field is one of the best ballparks in the League and deserves to be decked out in red/white/blue bunting in October.
As a blueprint for success, they need look no farther than their next-door neighbor - Century Link. What message do you hear from every player after a game, what is plastered on the walls and halls? " I'm In" "The next game is the most important game of the season".
I propose a new slogan - "THIS is the year". They have had an unexpected great start. Don't squander it. The window is open now - go for it. Be relentless. Keep grinding on the pitchers, get into bullpens and create havoc. No more 7 in a row set down by a minor league pitcher w/o a whimper. And if you're worried about being mocked by the media and sportswriters over your slogan - I know of one surefire way to silence them.
"Just win, Baby".
