Trevor Bauer is a solid pitcher, roughly of the same caliber as Nate Karns. Still, last night was by far his best outing of the season. Previously he had allowed 3 runs or more in six of his previous nine starts. Last night was not only his season high for strikeouts, but was only the 2nd time all year he walked less than 2 batters.
I take nothing away from Bauer, but I put last night's loss on the Mariners batters for swinging too much out of the zone, especially early in counts which allowed Baurer to go 7+ innings. I know it's tough against better pitchers, but our hitters need to stay patient and battle even against good strikeout pitchers. That way even if they get shut down, they can at least force their way into the bullpen by the sixth inning.
Granted, Seattle might still have won anyway if Seth Smith was just 1% stronger on his swing. But that's baseball.
