Dallas wins the second leg 2-1 but Seattle goes through with a 4-2 aggregate. On to Colorado, who eliminated the Galaxy in a penalty shootout yesterday.

seriously? Somebody would rather win the regular season then win the playoffs? Thats absolutely unbelievable to me. Must have loved 2005 when the seahawks won home field advantage, but lost super bowl.

They made the MLS playoffs for fans like you. The US only understands playoffs. They had to do it to attract Meathead Jones attention because Meathead Jones only know playoff rule.

So why do they bother to play the World Cup? Maybe they should just give a trophy to all the teams that qualify.

Daft

its daft to think the playoffs were made for "Meathead Jones."

Its the way they want to cap their season, the way they want to crown their champion. perhaps they didn't want to acquiesce to snobby Europeans?

Any word on Morris and Valdez? I think we can take Colorado especially at home.

Hope Ivanschitz as back by then and Torres is healthy.

Whether you see it as the championship or not it's a trophy. We haven't won anything this year so I really hope we win it.

I smell a little Euro elitist opinion here.

I didn't say I prefer the MLS playoff format, I merely said that's how it is, and therefore it matters more. It matters more to owners, it matters more to the players and it matters more to fans.

I love soccer, but I hold no arrogant opinions on the right and wrong ways to crown a champ. Single table is fine, but the MLS is trying to grow it's sport, it doesn't have a 100 year tradition and massive fan base like Europe that keeps fans interested in their clubs that are 20 pts out of first place.

The playoff format helps keep fans interested, no more evident than our own Sounders who would have had a massively disappointing season if not for the playoff format.

I guess that is true, if you completely ignore the fact that the MLS playoffs were crdated to attract meathead jones.

You really need to travel moreif you think that anybody else other than the majority of US citizens are viewed as snobhh and arrogant. Maybe the entirety of France, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone else.

I do travel, and honestly most Europeans barely know the MLS exists, let alone know what format we use to determine the champ. It's just not on their radar as a legitimate league to watch, other than "that's where our stars go to collect retirement home checks."

But your opinion on single table vs playoff is very European, as they think their way is not just the best way, it's the only way.

btw, you don't have to go to Europe to find these fans, they're right here in the US.........and I commend Garber and the owners for not giving a rat's ass about the US Euro soccer fan that looks down their noses at the MLS as an inferior league. They're trying to attract the casual US sports fan that might watch a match if it's a knockout round winner take all match.

Back to the Sounders, I was thoroughly impressed with their effort last night.

FC Dallas threw everything at them, and they did a fantastic job of not doing what most teams do with a 3-0 aggregate lead, park the bus. I just hope Morris is OK.

PS. Lodeiro is my new soccer man crush. He embodies everything I love in a soccer player, relentless work rate, unselfishness, leadership an an infection on pitch personality that feeds and makes better everyone around him.

Completely agree about Lodeiro. I do admit I still love Rosales and watching him play against us last night brought back memories how good he could be. Pity he is pretty old and was quite injury prone. Still great to bring on in 20 minute bursts.

Yep, loved me some Rosales when he was here. Very similar to Lodeiro as far as making the players around him better, and especially taking set piece kicks.

As far as Morris goes, I'm reading this morning that the club is calling it a hamstring issue, which makes me nervous. I was hoping it was a thigh bruise or something he can tough out. Hamstring is no bueno.

My goodness... you got us. You're doing terrific sport. I do need to travel more. you should tell my wife.

I do remember why the MLS created playoffs. I remember the NASL in the 1970s and early 80s. They used playoffs as well. It's not a stretch to believe that its just the system the MLS prefers. Perhaps, instead of wanting to attract "meathead jones" (which I'm certain is a reference to the uneducated american sports fan of any sport besides soccer) they preferred to attract the fan base that keeps the league relevant and growing.

more kids play soccer between the ages of 3 and 14 than any of the other sports combined. These kids favorite teams are in Spain and England, their favorite players are Messi, Pogba and Ronaldo. There are millions of expats in this country who were born from or claim their identity in nations where soccer is THE sport. These are the targets of the MLS. American soccer fans, many steeped in the traditions of their international peers, enjoy it. These are not converted football and basketball fans, but lifelong soccer fans.

It was a good win. In the end, dallas could only keep up that relentless pace for 70 minutes. They gassed out after that. I hate the chaotic pace that dallas was playing with because if that ball falls wrong it can result in an easy brace.

IMO it's both. While I don't agree with the "meathead" fan comment, the MLS has playoffs because they're trying to attract the casual American sports fan that is used to finality and a winner and loser in the games that matter.

It's when people get into what's right or what's the best for soccer, like there's only one correct answer............. that's when I bow out. What's "better" for the MLS is not a single table league that has 75% of it's clubs too far out of first place by July. It's to have an exciting playoff system that keeps hardcore AND casual fans engaged all the way until the end.

It doesn't need a long look into the stands at any MLS stadium to see what fans they are trying to attract. I don't even see a debate. I can look at the pre match ceremonies, the supporter groups, the building of unique stadiums and get a pretty clear idea who the MLS wants to bring in.

They want existing soccer fans to spend money on local teams. The sport itself is already massive.

MLS hasn't grown the way it has because the Garber and the league has solely been focused on existing soccer fans.

They've gone hard after the casual sports fan, locally and nationally. What's hooked those fans are all the things you're talking about. I have quite a few friends that purchased season tix to the Sounders after going to matches, a couple with me. The playoff format is just a small part of that entire concept of appealing to the largest demographic of sports fan, hardcore and casual possible.

Sounders are in the conference finals....who would have thought they would be considering the early-mid season play. Lodeiro and Schmetzer energized the team. Hopefully Morris can be back for at least one of the two conference finals matches. Sounders are running out of quality forwards fast...
