Seahawks o-line not bad, relatively speaking

When considering Seattle spends less on their o-line by a large margin, they are actually not that bad compared to some other teams.

The Carolina game definitely gave a big boost to our run numbers. They would have looked like crap the week prior.

Raiders are paying for it - $36,972,041, league high. Vikings are paying the 3rd highest at $32,477,398 and they suck.

I agree these numbers don't tell the whole story because, as others have said, Rawls and Russ are good enough to escape tackles when protection breaks down. And thank goodness for it.

Now imagine them behind a line like Dallas or Oakland's.

Cut backs are a staple in a zone blocking scheme. The design of the zone is to stretch until a hole opens (or there is a dark crease), but the cut back is almost read 1B in a zone scheme. It pays to have a back with the vision and cutting ability of Rawls, but that is not all on him.

You need to go watch the tape again. Most of the line save for Fant had some brilliant run blocks last week, even Sowell. Carroll called out Britt and Ifedi especially. And as pcbball12 pointed out, cutback lanes are a natural product of the scheme.

And the flip side to that coin is that Michael wasn't assignment correct and couldn't read the blocking he had. Look at the tape; he had good blocking at times and didn't always read it right.

So our OL was blocking for a guy that wasn't the greatest fit for our system and didn't maximize what was given him. That drags their grade down.

Just like QB hits; Wilson has caused a few of those by holding onto the ball too long and that's not a fault of the OL. They have their share of hits allowed but QBs can mitigate a lot of that as well. We have a good QB and a good RB. All we need a league average OL and I think we'll have that by season's end.

The problem is looking at individual games shows that when our O-line doesn't show up we can't score. 3 games with zero TDs makes the average irrelevant if you play the wrong team in the playoffs

From the chart, it looks like we already have that.

What the chart doesn't show, is that through the first few games, our O-Line was raw & inexperienced as hell, and Russell Wilson paid a hell of a price for it; What's also, not revealed, is how this group of greenhorns were pitted against some all-Pro Defenses right out of the chutes....Guys like Aaron Donald & Dadgummed Suh were meeting with very little to NO resistance on their way to Sack, smash, and hurry Russell Wilson.
I'm absolutely amazed that we didn't lose a couple more games early on, what with the MULTIPLE injuries that RW sustained, hell, if not for our Monster Defense bringing it, we probably would have.

I'd call our line inconsistently bad.

Seems like for every Panthers game, there's a Cardinals or Bucs game where all five guys look terrible.

Hopefully with Rawls and Russell healthy now the consistency will kick in and they won't have anymore regressive looking games.
