We have a small population that lives around the lake but I only see one on rare occasions, maybe twice a year.

One is currently sitting in a tree outside my back porch.

When I lived in San Diego, you could often see one early in the AM at Balboa Lake, about 12 miles inland. Small lake but decent fishing. Probably easier than fighting the waves for food. Amazing to see them catch a fish.
