I mean he was for years but OK.
But did Geno have to get an extention? But it’s not true. If Geno signs for let’s say $40 million per year then you still had that $13 million hanging around. So there’s still a $7 million per year difference. The thing with dead money is it’s already paid out. Geno was going to get an extension but wanted more than we got Darnold for. This we are acing that cap money.
Good gravy, you don't add Geno's dead cap hit onto Darnold's contract. Its that simple. If we reworked Geno's contract that cap hit would still be there regardless as well. By signing Darnold we saved at least around 7 to 10 mill in cap space period given what is reported as Geno's asking price. But did Geno have to get an extention?
I might be wrong but the Seahawks saved $31m in cap space by trading Geno. Darnold is reported on more than that in year 1 and while his cap hit is likely to be less than that isn't thart just pushing the problem back. If we want to keep Darnold the cap hit increases each year and if we dont he Donold and our next QB both require cap space.
Isn't there a world where the Seahawks tell Geno if he wont sign an extention he is still going t serve the last year of his current contract. We then try to draft someone who can be prepared for the speed of the NFL and is ready to start in 2026. Geno might not be happy, I don't know if he would refuse to play but doing so would not only cut his salary for this year but flag him as not a team friendly QB which would be likely to lower his value when he becomes a free agent.
It's a gamble either way, but they must feel Kubiak can get Darnold up to speed and out the gate quick. We should have just rolled with Howell and spent our capital on Oline. Howell is younger and cheaper than Darnold.

This same franchise had no qualms about pitting Geno Smith against Lock and just rolling with it.I rather have Geno. The only ginger I want throwing the ball is John Ryan.
I wish they would have went w Sam Howell. Use the money for the oline.
Better than $44.500,000, younger, and with luck a potentially higher ceiling Geno's early years in the league were not that special either. I really want to see the structure of his contract b/c his first year could be somewhat less then what Geno would have got.Our new $36M QB.
We we had kept Geno our cap space this year would be worse but we would have a clean slate for 2026. If things go well the rookie we got in the later rounds of this years draft blooms into a start level QB on next to no pay and with no dead cap out toal QB budget might be under $2m. If things don't work out then we get the Darnold equivalent in 2026.Good gravy, you don't add Geno's dead cap hit onto Darnold's contract. Its that simple. I'm sorry your just wrong. Geno wasn't staying without a reworked deal that was more expensive than what we paid Darnold and that includes guaranteed money as well. In no world would it have been less expensive. We we had kept Geno our cap space this year would be worse but we would have a clean slate for 2026. A lot of people are talking about Darold being a bridge I dont know the exact numbers but if we have a QBOTF next year (or even 2027) Darnold will be taking up cap space. If we are planning Darnold as a long term option I worry he might revert back to how he played for the Jets and Panthers.
And I think the point lacks merit.Well, the original poster has a point, that the total cap being dedicated to the cost of a QB is the same as if we had signed Geno for $40 million or so. That's all he's saying. He's not arguing that the Darnold contract is per se bad.
Is Darnold going to be throwing to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor, and TJ Hockenson here in Seattle?Geno have any 14-3 seasons to compare "laterally"? I think this is an upgrade. Maybe not franchise QB upgrade but the contract agrees with that. This is a 3 year commitment to let Sam have a stable organization and build an Offense around him. He's money in play action and Kubiak leads the league in calling play action. That will be great news for Walker and Charbs too. We just Oline and another WR threat and I'll be super happy so far.
No, its a fair point. we do not have the weapons he had in Minnesota. Geno I'm sure would have done very well there. Although their O line was pretty bad on the interior as well.Is Darnold going to be throwing to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor, and TJ Hockenson here in Seattle?
For the past several years, and multiple active threads currently.QB shmooB. Has anyone mentioned yet that we have to improve our OL?!
I mean, c'mon man!
