Ouzts and the use of a fullback

For years, I’ve been thinking why in the world don’t more teams use a fullback because it makes the running game so much more effective? In just two preseason games it is apparent that when a fullback is in there, the running game is great. In my opinion, for most running plays I’d much rather have a fullback in there than an extra tight end. I hope this will be the running scheme for many years to come.

The league got pass happy, and while a good FB can catch and run well, everybody thought 5 WR was better.

Now, with all of the defenses emphasizing speed over mass, a solid running game can make hay if they can move the 3-5 big guys up front. Even LBs are lighter than they were 10-15 years ago typically. A shift back to a more run oriented game makes sense in many ways. If you can run for 4-5 yards/play consistantly you can win some ball games.

Josh Allen was saying this yesterday. I guess Buffalo is going to be using a FB more as well.

I agree, I’m stoked that we will be incorporating the fullback position.

IMO, we do need to be careful in that we don’t provide a “tell” by using him on every run, and not having him on the field when passing the ball.

I suspect that the staff is savvy enough to not allow that scenario.

Outz can catch the ball so I don’t think it would be that much of a “tell” if he was in there.

I believe that was the job of the old "Quality Control Coach." Do they still have those? Keeping track of those kinds of stats seems kind of important. It's simple to say, "Hey, it's working! Do more of that!" But we all know if you do something too often the other guy is gonna figure a way to stop it. Nature of the beast.
