MacDonald on Milroe's use

“We have more plays for Jalen,” Macdonald said. “It’s a combination of we really like the plays that we have for him, and we’re doing a lot of great things on offense when Sam’s the only quarterback in the game, too, so trying to balance that as well. Part of the reason we’re having success right now on offense is that we’re throwing our fastballs and we’re running our offense. We’re running all of our plays and Jalen’s package is a part of that, and teams have to prepare for it.

“I think that helps us and we’re executing it really well in practice, and they look good in practice. You start getting conservative and not calling stuff because you’re scared, we don’t want to live like that. The play didn’t go our way, could have made a better pitch, could have had a better pitch relationship. We want to take care of the football, that’s number one, but we want to stay aggressive too.”

Milroe has yet to play more than one snap in a game, and there’s not a ton to suggest that will change any time soon. There is, of course, the reminder that Milroe wasn’t practicing at all with the first-team offense throughout training camp and preseason, so this has all come together recently instead of as a full offseason process.

If Klint Kubiak is to continue using Milroe, then the situational play calling has to be fine-tuned. It makes no sense to bring him in on 1st-and-10 and risk something as damaging as that fumble proved to be, but the 3rd-and-1 sneak he ran in preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs would be a much preferable way to use him. At some point, the Seahawks will also have to have Milroe be a threat to throw, otherwise opposing defense have every reason to key in on Jalen as a runner.

I bolded the above (in the quoted excerpt) 'cause it's true.

If teams know that Jalen won't throw, they will stack the box and just go after him immediately.

I just wish they’d let him develop…sit. Pay his dues…learn…maybe get reps when we’re sitting at a comfortable lead.

I’m a supporter of the kid. I think he’s going to be special one day.

But, these little ‘niche’ plays disrupt the flow of the offense more than anything at this point.

Did McDonald say this after the game, or is this a quote from the past?
Honestly anything other than "Jalen will be inactive for the rest of the season" is a mistake.

I would fully support firing McDonald and Kubiak at the end of the season if Milroe sees the field again.

My line of thinking is: "if they're willing to repeatedly do something this stupid, what other stupid things are they going to pull out of their azz?"

It's feeling like more and more that Milroe was intended as a gadget player for an offense that might struggle. I thought the pick was dumb as far as a developmental QB because Milroe's ceiling was soooo very low.

But this offense isn't in need of gadgetry to produce. It's time to tuck away that "weapon" and pretend it didn't happen.

Why do you think Milroe's ceiling is so low? I mean he's fast and has a cannon arm. All that's missing is the mental side of the game. How can you say he's incapable of learning that without knowing the guy?

I mean he's very much like Jalen Hurts. Up and down college career but enough highs to warrant being drafted and solid arms and legs.

I am not against gadget plays per se. I’m against sitting Drew the entire game just to try it

I strongly disagree with the coach on this.

Not only does Milroe’s gadget packages disrupt the flow of the regular offense, it’s also putting too much pressure on Milroe.

Essentially, they’re telling him, “okay, kid, you’ve got one play this game. Don’t muck it up. Go get ‘em.”

I haven’t been shy on my lack of confidence in Milroe being the QBOTF, but this is flat out not fair to him at all. You’re not giving him the correct opportunities to prove himself. His confidence is going to shatter if his one play a game turns out poorly, such as last week. He’s going in the game with the expectation of making something great happen, and he’s both incapable of doing that, and the other teams are expecting whatever he’s about to do because of how Kubiak utilized Taysom Hill.

This is a failed experiment and I hope someone talks some sense into the coach. Very disappointed to hear coach say this.

I'm guessing they bought into the narrative that Darnold would fail without Jefferson/Addison/Hockenson to throw to so they brought in Milroe to help the offense (in theory).

Though I'm still of the belief that Milroe was actually Plan B in case Darnold didn't pan out but then again I don't know what the actual thought process was in going after Milroe in the draft to begin with. I'm just making assumptions.

Exactly how many points had the “flow of the offense” put on the board before Milroe was brought in?

Bonus question, how many points did they put up after the Milroe play?

For whatever reason, Darnold went on an absolute tear after that play.

Did you mean his ceiling is low or his floor is low. Cause I would agree his floor is really low if he doesnt develop. But I dont know how you cant say his ceiling is sky high if hes developed right. Cannon arm and all the athleticism in the world. I know its now considered in fashion to hate on him cause of his one mistake...

It’s time to can it. We have the QBOTF now. And he’s been awesome.
To answer the question. We had zero before. Meyers! And got 35 after.

Conceptually that play was DOA. He's a right-handed QB and they're having him pitch with left hand. It looked goofy.

IF they really feel they need to use him, copy/paste Lamar Jackson's designed runs. Layer in passes later once he is successful with these runs. Right now, no defensive coordinator is losing sleep over these cute plays they are calling with JM.

Otherwise, just keep JM off the field and do something they're actually good at, like 12 personnel:

because he couldn't do in in college when surrounded by talent.

Milroe desperately needs playing time if he’s to improve — but he’s not good enough to play. JS drafted a QB who can’t throw — dumb pick.
