Heard parts of the interview on Bump and Stacy. The staff is discussing this very topic, including using current players like TE and other RBs as the FB. Said while they might consider using Murphy, he will NOT be the starting FB. ;)

Anyway, I guess Klint has used the FB in the past and the Hawks are now discussing the best way to fill that role going forward, whether it be in the draft, possible FA pickup, or using an existing player/s. Nothing says committment to the running game like using a precious roster spot on a FB. :)
Yeah, Kubiak used a FB both at Minnesota and New Orleans last year. NO had a roster spot for a traditional FB, but they also used Taysom Hill somewhat regularly as a FB (in addition to TE, RB, and occasionally QB), far more than NO had used him in that spot in the past.

I think the best use of that roster spot is a combo TE/FB or RB/FB. You could also try and make the FB be a special teamer (ala Bellore, but with an actual good amount of offensive snaps instead of just one-offs). That said, NO's FB is a free agent this year and--given the type of market there is for FBs these days--would probably not cost much to sign.

Overall, I liked what he had to say but it all kind of just reinforced why he was my preference from the beginning.

Key takeaways for me-

More than one way to win: Shane Waldron had a decent opening script but beyond that, he was super reliant on Geno to be the offense. Grubb came in and doubled down on that concept in the worst possible way. Not only was our offense almost entirely Geno's arm, but it was also literally just straight shotgun dropback passing. Kubiak has no interest in repeating that mistake.
He had a bit where he specifically said you can't just drop back 50 times a game, which I'm sure wasn't meant as a direct shot on Grubb but you can't help but read into that a bit.

Outside Zone - Our way of doing business: He's sticking with outside zone. I'm pumped about having an actual identity for our offensive line and thus our offense as a whole. We haven't had it in a long time. Lot of young guys on O-Line right now who haven't had a base scheme to try and use as that crutch when they get out of their depth talent wise. Whether this is the best scheme specifically for our line, our RB room, etc. is *almost* irrelevant to me, the big deal is just having something that all these guys will get reps in.
I still want more talent--particularly at IOL--but I think it's underestimated how much consistent scheme, reps, and coaching will do for the guys we have right now.

Utilizing DK:
Sounds like this was a part of the interview process from Macdonald's end. I get the feeling the team is expecting DK to be a Seahawk next year. (I for one am happy about that, not least because that's my son's favorite player).

Red Zone struggles: Two key points here--one was that Mike was fairly insistent that you can't just try to bandage up issues from the previous OC, which I think is healthy (even though going with Kubiak is about as big of a turnaround from signing Grubb as you can get).
Two is that Klint zeroed in on getting better on 1st and 2nd down in the red zone because getting into third and long is a losing proposition. This really strikes as a guy who really has kind of diagnosed our struggles. I like it.

I've been saying for years now that the 3rd down success stat is a bit of a red herring, since it depends heavily on how well you do on 1st and 2d down so you prevent getting in those high risk/low reward 3rd and long situations. 🤷‍♂️

First down and 2d down success is much more important to me. That applies anywhere on the field BTW, not just in the red zone. Admittedly, though, those 3d and longs in the RZ become much more risky.

Yeah he and Mike sure don't come off as the most energetic personalities, but hey, as long as they produce a perennial championship-caliber team, I'll take mellow!

So will I.

Has a QB ever fallen asleep on the field when getting the calls from the OC? This is one of the most low-energy guys I've ever seen.

Not saying that makes him a bad coach, but I'd be more comfortable if he actually brought a little energy, confidence and leadership to the sideline.

I'm taking the wait and see approach, but I really don't feel good about this hire. The fact he only had one other interview which was the lowly Browns with a QB who can't play any longer says a lot too.

I'm excited for some reason but I was excited about Grubb so who knows. If Geno is on the roster I seriously hope Kubiak is all in and already sees stuff he can do with Geno. Get them some line help and see what happens. I think the running game takes the biggest leap though.
More play action can only be good for Geno

There's also an argument for the cerebral guy who stays calm and collected with a methodical approach.

That's how I'm looking at it. Same with MM. We probably won't see any meltdowns in front of the media with these guys.

This. The league has seen it's share of loudmouthed, boisterous types that have been all hot air. Barry Switzer, JonFox, Steve Mariucci... our own Gus Bradley (although not in the same category) was a high energy guy but that energy never materialized into much anything great after he left here.

I will take quiet and competent all day.

If you look at who the best coaches in the league are, it seems like a relatively even mix of firey, passionate leaders, and more reserved, emotionless guys. I don't think there's any evidence that one way is more effective than the other; just whatever works for their personality is fine with me. Better than wasting energy trying to maintain some facade. Nobody respects that and the coaches spend too much time with the players to get away with it for long.

Agreed. I know I get killed for hating Geno which I don't, but I am excited to see what Kubiak does with him or whoever is the guy.
