This is my first post and I have to confess, I've been a lurker on here for a long time. I noticed this little fact and couldn't help but share it. Has anyone else noticed that if the Hawks repeat, they would be the only post-merger team to do so? That's a pelt I'd love to see the Hawks hang on the wall. :th2thumbs:

Patriots did it.

The Patriots were a founding member of the AFL in 1960, as were the Broncos. I also should clarify, I meant post-merger expansion team.

So "post merger" would be past 1970 and on. So that excludes the Packers. After that,,,,,,,,,,Miami, Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, New England. So no we would not be the first "post merger".

To your point, There have been 6 NFL expansion teams since the "merger" 3 have won a Super Bowl. Baltimore should not be considered an expansion team. So basically Tampa Bay and Seattle who in all reality have each won 1 Super Bowl.

With all due respect this is not a big deal. However the bigger story would be not only our franchise winning another Super Bowl but the first to repeat since the 2004 season. 10 years!

So in 39 years 7 teams have repeated. So since the Patriots last Super Bowl win, the average was ever 5.5 years there was a repeat champion

If we repeat,, yes big story. First expansion team since the "merger" no.

Either you didn't get his point or I didn't. All the teams you named were in the NFL before 1970.

Since the merger of the two leagues the only teams that have come into the league are Tampa Bay, Seattle, Cleveland (second team), Jacksonville, Houston (second team) and Carolina. None of those teams have won the SB 2 times.

So wasn't his point that we would be the first post expansion team to win 2 super bowls? Now I don't think that is a big deal cause there are so few post expansion teams but I think he is right.

He means we would be the first team that entered the league post-merger to repeat.

I know a Cowpatties fan that hates The Hawks that a rubber room and a straight jacket will be reserved for when this happens. He hates talking about things in the present and always resorts to "old trophy talk" when he starts losing an arguement.

Only six teams have repeated in the Super Bowl era:

Packers, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, Broncos, Patriots, in that order.

Two under Rozelle, four under Tagliabue, zero under Goodell.

Only two in the salary cap era.

Only two did it as their first two SB championships (Packers and Steelers), the rest had to get one first then wait.

It's super exclusive company to begin with.

Repeating in the Goodell era can be argued to be almost as hard as three peating was in the old days.

As you know, every SB champion in the Goodell era has failed to win a playoff game the following season. I still can't wrap my head around that fact.
