How different will our offense be next season?

At the end of last season, I didn't think our offense would be much different next season but now it feels like it could be very different. The new draft picks plus Harvin and Michael seem to give us a faster more versatile dimension. I see us throwing more, playing faster and being more successful in the red zone. The additions give the Hawks the ability to play fast or hard depending on the defense they are facing.

Do you see Bevell developing a deeper, more aggressive playbook this season? Or will it be tweaks on last year's book?

I think they will still have the run first mentality with elements of being pass happy at times. C-Mike, Harvin, P-Rich are going to stretch the field. No longer will teams be able to stack the box against Lynch, like Denver, SF, AZ, and STL did.
......and if they do, they will have problems like Denver did in XLVIII. Opponents will have to pick their poison on how they want to get beat....... 8)

To play the other side, aside from the actual SB, the offense struggled mightily to score points in large stretch towards the end of the season, including the playoffs.

I mean look at the home game against the cardinals. There were more than a few posters complaining about the lack of offensive efficiency and lack of redzone TDs

We made the Harvin trade for a reason.

I'm sure we'll see a little more pass offense, especially with our new speed guys. But, yeah, still "run-first".

I think we will see a lot of the same elements with the running game used to set up the pass, but I expect we will be more consistent in all phases of the game. This will lead to scoring more points.

This is our fourth year under Darrell Bevel, and the offense has improved every year under his watch.
2011: 23rd in scoring (20.1 points per game)
2012: 9th in scoring (25.8 points per game)
2013: tied with Green Bay for 8th in scoring (26.1 points per game)

Percy Harvin and Christine Michael are going to add a whole new range of explosive plays to this offense. They are both threats to take it all the way as both runners and receivers. We're probably going to see more screens for this reason. Russell Wilson will continue to progress as a QB and the leader of this offense. Doug Baldwin is poised for his first thousand-yard season as he plays all three receiver positions. Jermaine Kearse, Sidney Rice, Kevin Norwood, and Luke Wilson (when he lines up in the slot) will give Wilson bigger receiving threats downfield.

And most importantly, the offensive line will come together to play the best they have played in several years. Okung and Unger will stay healthy and look to dominate like they did in 2012. J.R. Sweezy will take that next step in his development to become a truly dominant run and pass blocker. Second-year linemen Bailey and Bowie will play consistent football as starters. And Britt, Carpenter, and Jeanpierre will give them quality depth.

If this happens, I imagine we will see the most scoring since 2005, when we led the league with 28.3 points per game.

They have already said they are looking for a more balanced attack so that would mean an increase in passing. If we have an avg of 60+ plays a game I would like to see a minimum of 3o+ passes.

THAT SAID, I found a comment from Richard Sherman's most recent presser very encouraging.

I suspect our short passing game will see the biggest change. Improving the amount of time it takes to get a play off will pay huge dividends in O-line play and assist in keeping our linemen healthy. It will also help in beating blitzes as well appending things up over the top and spreading defenses to open holes for the running game. Overall though I think that will be our biggest change.

Here's some interesting stats...

Russell rushed the ball 96 times for a total of 539 yards... but admittedly, almost 20 of those were kneel-downs... but if you subtract his carries from the team's total, you'll find that we're a slightly a pass-first team at 420 to 413.

How many of his ~75 rushes were designed runs vs. scrambling on a called pass play is anybody's guess.

I believe the biggest difference we'll see is Percy running fly sweeps like in the SB, and with options for Russell off of those fly sweep motions... so, I expect more pre-snap motion than we have seen thus far.

With the defenses we'll be facing the first half of the season, everyone will be thinking our "new" offense is going to overwhelm everyone. Then the rollercoaster effect will kick in when we start facing that brutal second half and the offense suddenly seems to be sputtering. Lots of consternation and people who don't understand what's "wrong".

Nothing will be wrong of course, the offense is pretty damned good already and last season they faced top 10 defenses in 11 of 18 games so naturally they looked inconsistent. They'll be a better offense next season IMO, but people will think they're even better because they're going to get off to a fast start.

Pete has always preached a stout running game coupled with BIG PLAYS. I think the weapons we've added for big plays will have a ripple effect and open up many of those chess-match strategies.

I don't see "passing more" itself as the main difference from last year, rather an expansion of possibilities on any given play in any given situation (bubble screens, fly sweeps, deep shots, read-options, more dynamic play action, etc.). I hope so, anyway. Some of the potential for diversity in playcalling will depend on the durability and success of the o-line, though.

I think the SB gave us a little glimpse into how Pete wants the offense to run next year with a healthy Harvin.

Use Harvin all over the field, not only as a primary weapon, but as a decoy to stretch the defense on motion and play action in order to open up holes for Beast Mode.

So I see Pete and Darrell finally getting to install the dynamic offense they wanted in 2013 next year, as long as Percy stays healthy.

I expect to see more quick hitters to Harvin, and with Richardson trying to take the top off the defense, more intermediate stuff to Willson and Norwood. Tier concepts, I believe it's called.

yeah and we didn't have Harvin for the season. Harvin WILL make a huge difference, not just in his touches but in the fear and influence it will have on the defense. The team doesn't want to be "run heavy" it wants balance. For large stretches last year we were pathetic on 3rd down. If say we get that conversion rate up over 35% you will see us throwing close to 30 times a game, with the extra plays that converting brings. We should be more explosive on offense this year. and assuming we don't have the dreadful injury luck we should perform at a higher level.

Looking at it as an outsider I can say that I'm not looking forward to having to stop the power run game with Lynch and also have to deal with the speed on the outside you'll get from Harvin and Richardson.

That play action is going to be nasty.
