QBs and their cap/contracts:

Geno is one of the cheapest vets, he is in the good price/performance category, but at 35yo and seemingly hearing footsteps, he provides limited upside or hope to the fan base.

This a great list. Now people insisting we get rid of Geno have a shopping list.

Who do you guys like on this list?
From the list I see a few names I might want to have a look at, without knowing their availability. First is Lance in because why not. Then 2015 Heisman winner and runner up Winston and Mariota as early thirties Reclamation project 2.0. Jake Browning would be extremely cheap and people seem to like him but I haven't seen enough lately to know. Davis Mills? All intriguing sure but not and upgrade, at least not immediately.

We will definitely draft a QB in later rounds and elevate Sam to see if he can really be a reclamation project. Right now you have to fill your roster with talent you can draft and talent you can replace by managing cap space. The Geno challenge is his age and risk to injury. He has also elevated his market value that the Hawks may not be willing to pay. You also might be obligated to pay fair share being a Hawk which is more emotional of a decision than a business decision. If your philosophy shifts to winning in the trenches, then you find ballers who have the strength and will to fight and run at will. Add an element of mobile QB could be the direction the organization could be leaning to. This means less WR talent and more focus on D and an imposing run package.

...Also are you sure it’s a 40 million dollar cap hit if he’s cut before march?

Also bringing Geno back may be the best move for the team next year. I trust Mike and John to figure it out.
There is no $40M cap hit. It's nonsense from people who can't read a Spotrac page. Over the past few seasons Smith has been paid $13.5M that hasn't been accounted for against the cap. That money will count against the 2025 cap regardless of whether Smith is with the team or not. Smith is now due $31M for the 2025 season thanks to $6M of performance incentives kicking in. The situation changes on March 16 when Smith is due $10M as a roster bonus. Sensibly his future should be sorted out before then. The team has a $31M decision to make within 67 days.

There's nothing wrong with people wanting to move on from Geno. There's also nothing wrong with people wanting them to keep him around.

The only things that bother me are the people saying they are going to get an OC that calls more run plays while the Oline is so bad that it's nearly impossible to be consistently productive doing so. Its got to be a two way street. Also, i'm wondering if MM is trying to get a mobile QB over anything else since he coached a team with Lamar on it and he knows no other way. I'm just saying there is a place in the league for pocket passers. I'm reaching on that last thought, but it's possible.

Burrows, Stafford, Goff, Rodgers, Prescott, Mayfield, Carr, Herbert, so on and so forth are all pocket passers and they did pretty darn good this season. You're definitely right.

The most frustrating thing about our pocket passer is the fact that Geno is actually very athletic. Back at the combine, Geno ran a 4.59 40. That is damn fast, Russell Wilson was 4.55, not much a difference there. Geno also had the quickest clocked time in terms of MPH in several games this year. Honestly, Geno looks like he's in better shape than the guy at the combine. He's taken good care of himself.

What I'm getting at here is Geno is legitimately fast and athletic. Geno Smith has one of the quickest 40 times of starting QBs. It's frustrating because he had so many opportunities to gash teams on the ground. Just having to put a spy on Geno would potentially put one person in a less than ideal spot to make a play. Instead, he plays like he's 40 year old Kurt Warner in the pocket.

If Geno leveraged his athletic talents, he'd legitimately be a scary QB. The man can run and he has decent agility. I've seen him do Russell Wilson impersonations before. It's infuriating seeing him not take advantage of how athletic he is. Geno could do a good Josh Allen impersonation if he worked on his improv skills and leveraged his speed.

Burrow.

Also, no way in hell he could come close to Josh Allen. Zero chance. I do agree he needs to run more. But will he just slide and/or make his business decision?

I'm saying he could bring a similar dynamic into his game. Josh Allen is one of the best QBs in the NFL, the guy has it all -- especially since he reined in his turnovers. I'm not saying Geno will be Josh Allen. What I am saying, is he could pull off some similar things. That doesn't mean trucking people like Allen does, what it does mean is he could gash people consistently if he used his speed. He had so many freebees this season where he could of easily gotten 10-20 yards, but instead he takes a sack or stays in the pocket when he should bail.

Even if Geno gets no better at reading defenses, he would be scary good if he used his speed to his advantage. Making that extra defender spy you and making the defense focus on running is a huge asset.

I said it before and I shall repeat here. Geno wants nothing more than a long term contract before he hangs it up. He avoid any risk of injuries that could derail that contract. Running is one of those risks.

Even if Geno gets no better at reading defenses, he would be scary good if he used his speed to his advantage. Making that extra defender spy you and making the defense focus on running is a huge asset.
Been wanting him to run more the last 3 years. If he's afraid to do it, I don't want him being the QB of this team.

There are three categories of guys on that list

The unobtainable - Mahomes, Allen, etc.

The rookie contracts - A few are good, those are also unobtainable, but most are.

The journeymen - Geno is probably the best in this category.

I said it before and I shall repeat here. Geno wants nothing more than a long term contract before he hangs it up. He avoid any risk of injuries that could derail that contract. Running is one of them those risks.
I agree with you here. Geno has made it known that he wants a new contract, several times in fact just this year. He whispered in the offseason that he is looking for a contract and during the regular season he's said the same multiple times. He is for sure making business decisions. He looks unnatural and afraid almost when he is outside of the pocket.

The flip side of this though is if you're struggling and stuck in a bad system -- you have the ability to flip things in your favor with your athletic talent. If Geno leveraged his speed, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion and we'd be singing his praises. Yes, he'd be risking injury, but also he'd be positioning himself for a bigger pay day at the same time.

All that being said I do understand trying to play it safe too.

I couldn't agree more, but Geno never impressed me being strong in critical thinking or logical deductions.

Play to win, not to just be safe. This is the same QB who slid a yard short of a 1st down in a HUGE home game.

It is frustrating to watch those open field areas not being taken advantage of. Geno is capable of scrambles and good yardage, but he just seems very hesitant to do so. As it's been said, injury risk while hoping for another contract is a legitimate reason and regardless of the current physical condition he's kept himself in, getting hit in your mid 30's can't be inviting. I wish he would throw caution to the wind, but he's probably a whole lot smarter about it than I want him to be.

I would take anything reported from this guy and this channel with a grain of salt. Pure garbage. Also, Mike gave Geno a much better endorsement during his season ending presser. But that may have been a bit of damage control from the radio interview that was referenced in this clip.

No way in hell Geno is gone unless they want to downgrade to Howell.

I don't understand the logic behind getting rid of Geno at this point in time. That would be like quiting a job you don't like for a worse one with less pay with the hopes the one you want is available in 2 years
Yeah, I think Geno will be back, but it wouldn't be shocking if they moved on from him. Just not sure what the plan for his replacement would be.
