I'm just not seeing it on here. And I certainly am not saying it. And I'm not even close to a geDIOCRE fan.
But there's no way I would prefer to have Howell over Geno as the starter on this team.

I agree with this.

As a team, Seahawks have 3 'pools' to go from at QB.

1) Stick with someone you have. At this point, this is exclusively Geno because it's pretty well established that Howell isn't going to be ready for next year (or maybe ever). Geno's been a tremendous value at QB in terms of what we've gotten for what we've paid for. But next year, that changes and tied with Geno's bonuses, we're looking at a cap hit that's a good $10M over where we want to be.

That's not a terrible amount to renegotiate over and I think a new contract similar to the one he last signed (adding a couple more years but leaving the Seahawks with outs and tying some of his money to incentives) is probably pretty reasonable.


2) Free Agency. This is where things get tough for both the Seahawks AND Geno. The list of easily available FAs who would be upgrades from what we have is zero. The list of guys who we might be able to get who might be of roughly equivalent talent level is 1. (Darnold) There is 1 or 2 backups that would be cheaper holdovers (like Jimmy G, maybe Carson Wentz... the Justin Fields or Zach Wilson suggestions are just nuts to me) who could possibly surprise, but it's otherwise slim pickings.
If the Seahawks believe they are a competitive team right now, we have a better QB on our roster then anybody in the FA field.

That said, there aren't many teams that are going to be in the market for a QB like Geno, either. Teams with a reasonable shot at winning in the next season or two (so not a rebuild) and also need an upgrade at QB aren't many. The Raiders, maybe (and I suggest that almost entirely due to Pete), the Steelers possibly. That's about it. This gives the Seahawks some leverage to get Geno's contract to be a little team-friendlier.


3) The Draft. Good draft year, bad draft year... I really don't care. The draft is a crap shoot. CJ Stroud was the best rookie QB ever, then he was a bottom 10 QB this year. Caleb Williams was the surefire, only NFL ready prospect in the last draft, and he was one of the worst QBs in the league this year. If Schneider or Macdonald see a QB in the draft they like, I want them to draft him. I don't, however, think he should be starting, so this isn't a 'this year' solution either. We (once again) have a brand-new OC and (once again) have big issues with the O-Line.

But we should bring someone in to be ready to succeed Geno and compete with Howell. If Geno was 28, I'd still be saying this. Do I want them to sacrifice getting the best LG or the best D-Lineman to draft a QB just to say they did it? No, absolutely not, but I don't think we should ignore it either.

Like it or not this is 100% accurate. Same with what dark is replying to. It's basically just option 1 and then option 3 for a few years from now. Some people are acting like it's Madden and it's far from it, things aren't always that easy. There is a lot more than what you realize that goes into decisions like this. So many moving parts.

I am speculating here, Wilson did not want anyone who could challenge his job. He therefore forbidded the drafting of QBs but 'ok'ed the hiring of Geno as his backup, knowing the Geno was a geNO.

It must be shocking for Wilson to find out that for one game, geNO turned into Geno and ruined his first game as a Bronco, which is also his return home party. LOL, Russ dressed up for the post-game celebration that didn't quite happen as scripted. Geno also laid the seeds for hate by Wilson fanboys.
