I'm anxious to see how Bailey performs as the starting left guard, assuming Carpenter can't go and Okung can. Bailey could be auditioning for a future starting role at left guard, depending on whether the team decides to part ways with Carpenter after this season.
He has mostly thrived in pass pro while taking over a backup role at left tackle this season (making his first start there against the Raiders in place of Okung), but has mostly struggled in his career as a run blocker. When Bailey was first signed as an undrafted free agent, Cable talked about playing Bailey at tackle first and then eventually moving him inside to guard as his run blocking improved. Injuries may have accelerated the timetable for his development.
Like the rest of the offensive line, Bailey has had his share of struggles over the past couple games. After going 132 plays without allowing a single sack or QB hurry, he has allowed six hurries in two games while rotating between guard and tackle. In addition to allowing three hurries against the Raiders, Bailey was credited with two penalties. Hopefully a full week of practice at left guard with the first team has him feeling more comfortable now with the position. He's going to have to raise the level of his play for the OL to succeed without Carpenter in the lineup.
