Just heard on a a crossover podcast between Dan Viens & Bryce Couts that apparently MM wanted Arthur Smith as his OC, but Smith didn't know if he was gonna get an offer from anyone else and didn't want to wait.

Thoughts?

Well this might add some validity to the idea that Grubb was a JS pick rather than MacD's choice.

Despite ranking 9th in Offense and the Steelers 16th, they average more rushing yards than we do at 138 to our 91 and the Steelers are averaging 23.4 points a game to Seattle's 23.3.

Seattle is definitely dominating more in the passing game, but doesn't the team always tout itself as a run first team? Albeit the Steelers line does rank higher... At 20th. As oppose to the Seahawks 29th, which is a big enough gap apparently because being ranked 20th's isn't exactly being world beaters.

This news makes me feel more positive about our young Macdonald, as he wasn't afraid to hire people with more league experience and achievement than himself. I have been advocating to oust of Grubb for a few weeks, and I still feel that way.

Smith would've been pretty fantastic here. Geno is a pretty good fit for what Arthur likes to do (he'd have to get a bit smoother from under center but otherwise) and our running game would certainly be happier.

Why anyone would want Grubb over Arthur Smith, I have no idea. Arthur has always been a proven elevator of performance as an OC despite being overmatched as a head coach.

Damn it. What could've been.

I need Grubb's ass outta here. Please go to Alabama. Please please please go to Alabama.

Geno under center = 16 trips or fumbles a year. The man has the grace of a water buffalo, at least in his first few steps. He is one of those guys that is sneaky fast, but not quick.

Yeah dude. Running the ball and going under center, utilizing play action is for the birds.
He has straight up sucked at his job for years. He was good when he had Derrick Henry which got him a head coaching job and has been terrible since.

This board is luney tools if they think Arthur Smith is the answer for offensive football. He is awful.
I guarantee this board would have melted down had we hired him. Also our offense hasn't been bad. Our problem has been penalties, turnovers, and a center and QB who do not seem to be on the same page.

I'd have loved Smith. I'm probably in the minority, but Im tired of this finesse, always-in-shotgun BS.

Here is the thing though. I can guarantee that our shotgun heavy focus is not just Grubb its Geno too. Coordinators tailor offenses to what their QB likes to run.
Blaming the shotgun on Grubb is a little short sighted.
To be clear I would like more under center work as well but I think Geno like many QBs prefers to play in shotgun formations.

This is the most uncreative, one dimensional offense I have ever seen. I watched Grubb in college. I was extremely disappointed we hired him. I knew he was gonna suck and be uncreative and pass happy. Everyone else should of known also.

That is almost certainly something that can be repped out, though.

It's very possible that there's an alternative explanation for our vanilla run game and Geno lining up excessively in shotgun: Grubb is scheming around a bad OL. Typically, when fans ask why their team isn't doing X, the answer is that their personnel aren't good at it, which they aren't going to say in public.

I mean, you guys can't call out Connor Williams stepping on Geno's foot and then wonder why Geno is in shotgun so much.

Anyway, get Bradford and Jerrell out of there and we'll see what Grubb can do. In the meantime, I've seen enough interesting things (inside WR screens last week) that have showed good execution for chunk plays, so I know something is there with Grubb.

But why is he awful? He's been successful everywhere he's gone as an OC. Did absolutely wonderful work in Tennessee and they were immediately worse when he left. He's now doing good work in Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Grubb may as well be wiping his ass with his playsheet.
