No. He wasn’t cooked. He passed for 4,169 yards and 24 touchdowns, 11 INTs, an 11-5 record, and a playoff appearance.

The next season, both the Niners, and the Dolphins reached out to him, when their starters were out, going into the post season.
It's been 5 years. You can't just come off the couch and dominate. It's not realistic.

Those passes are getting picked.

It's either disney movie stuff or it's going to be a car crash. Nothing in between. He's got the whole nation outside of Seattle rooting for him this week though and I get it. If they weren't playing the hawks I'd probably root for him too. Everyone loves an underdog.

I never suggested he could. Just answering Chukar’s question of whether Rivers was cooked when he retired five years ago.

He wasn’t, and he had opportunities to keep playing at the time.

I’m morbidly fascinated to see what he does, and hope he survives this game, then, as unlikely as it is, thrives for the rest of the season.

Fair enough. His arm was noodle when he retired.
The death of Philip Rivers arm was declared as far back as 2010. He went on to play another 10 years in the league.

He did have a unique throwing style, memorably referred to as looking like a medieval trebuchet, odd, but effective.

His strength was navigating the pocket, and reading defenses. He was not known for his deep ball, though that is not to say he couldn't pull it out when needed. It is unclear to me if this is more due to scheme or physical ability. Either way, he didn't need it to find success, and to have a potential HOF career.

Being said, he could still sling the ball when called upon to do so.

This was a 48-yard dime in 2020, his final season.

And some more highlights. He didn't have a canon for an arm, but it was hardly a noodle. There are plenty of 20 plus yard lasers in here. Most with great touch.

His average yards per attempt in 2020 were about 0.3 yards under league average, despite having a weak receiver corp. T.Y. Hilton, who's next two seasons consisted of 331 yards and 121 yards receiving, was his leading receiver with 762 yards. He also had Pascal, Pittman, and Hines. He still managed 4,169 yards, while his rookie running back, Jonathan Taylor, netted 1,169 yards.

There are a ton of posts claiming he had a noodle arm, but I have yet to see one showing evidence to back the claim.

The Colts elevated QB Brett Rypein from practice squad to active 53 man roster

Source Colts official website

Technically they signed Rypien to the roster which opened the space on the PS to sign Rivers.

They will usually announce decisions on PS elevations on Saturday.

Well, now we know why he's coming back. Gotta move the goalposts for Stafford. :p

Rivers

Seriously though, every time Rivers went up against the Seahawks it was a Carroll coached defense. It has no bearing on how the current MOB will do against him. I wouldn't be surprised if Rivers has a couple of good games in him, TBH. But I bet he wakes up on monday wishing he'd never signed that contract.

I don’t see him coming in and dominating but, the Hawks have a tendency of letting weird shit happen to them…at least, we saw this a few times in the PC era: “first nfl catch is a TD!!”, “first time with 150 receiving yards “, “ rookie WR goes for 160+”….

The biggest threat may be our guys not taking the Colts as a real challenge. After dominating our last two opponents, it would be easy to ‘take it easy’. I think MM has a firm handle on that though.

I’ll shat my pants if Rivers throws for 300 on us.

I don’t expect to put my Wet Wipes to use though…

What I want to happen is he gets destroyed by the Hawks (though somehow escapes injury) and then beats the Niners the following week. :devilish:

Does anyone else notice that when he does that s*** eating grin he looks like a Garbage Pail Kid?
Dude has the goofiest facial expressions. It used to bother me a little whenever we played the Chargers.

There will be challenges, but I don't think the team taking them lightly is one of them. They know the whole country will be watching the highlights from this one, whether to see Rivers getting blown up or see him getting off the couch to beat the vaunted Seahawks defense. I think they'll be hyped.
