Probably going to be the spot for the FB.
I was just thinking about posting that same thing. Brady Russell just might have more overall value to this team with the new philosophy.

The Seahawk's Tight Ends always come in with so much hype... it's not like they suck, they just never live up to the hype.

Its CRAZY that they couldn't trade him, the NFL must know something about him that we don't.

His salary was average for starting TE's, it's not like they were breaking the bank to keep him.

I give this choice a D grade with the opportunity to move up depending on what they do with that money.

I know it's all about how the contract is structured but 10M doesn't buy much...but it did buy us a starting TE.
The Hawks have never really had “that guy” at TE. Like I said previously I’d love for them to have a killer at that position. **** the Niners but I’d give my left nut to have a Kittle type here for a decade wreaking havoc on opposing D’s game in and game out. Zach Miller was good but not that guy cause Pete hated TE’s.

For an all too brief time, Zach Miller was that guy!

Zach went on to be a Steeler?

So we have 40 million now? I think any amount of contract can be cooked up from that pile of swag?

Too brief a time. Good teams have formidable tight ends. Great teams turn tight ends into foundational, cornerstone pieces.

IMHO the fact that no TE ever sustainably flashed, in the Carroll/ Schneider era, is a direct consequence of the garbage offensive lines that we fielded.

Too often we needed the tight end to provide extra protection, an extra lineman of sorts, instead of playing to his receiving potential.

We had some receiving dogs, but those skills weren’t fully utilized by this team.

Hopefully that changes under MM/ Schneider.

Not surprised or bothered Fant has been released
Tight Ends are moving Bowers, LaPorta are used as offensive weapons
400 yds & 0 TDs doesn't cut it anymore

Let's see what Arroyo & Barner bring to the table

Like most in here, I didn't see this one coming. We don't have a problem with cap space as we're currently at $28.7M under, 10th most in the league. That's plenty of room for a contingency fund, so unless we have something big in mind, this can't be considered a cap casualty.

Additionally, there are now just 3 TE's in the room: A 1-year vet who started in just 6 games, a rookie draft pick, and a journeyman. That, too, makes this move even more of a head scratcher.

All I can think of is that since Fant is not a very good blocking tight end, and since our rookie draft pick isn't noted for his inline blocking, either, that it's another sign that we're trying to become a run-first offense, which made Fant expendable.
