I don’t see why the Vikings would trade him. Even if they do, they will want a first.

While they have a dearth of picks this year, they have near league top in cap space. Over 75 million, IIRC.

It makes the most sense to sign Darnold to a decent contract, with a lot of performance clauses, and let McCartthy develop under him. Look to trade or cut Darnold in 2026.

Even in this era, most of the most successful QBs are understudies for a bit.

No way the Vikings are stupid enough to trade a player let alone QB they used the 10th overall pick on first a 2nd and 4th 1 year after drafting him simply because he got injured.

More likely we end up with the 18th/19th pick and I could see them doing that at least.

I don't see a scenario where Vikings trade JJ. Darnold will hit FA and get overpaid by someone else, probably the Giants. He'll prove to be the same mid QB he's always been and JJ will enjoy similar success with a top notch Minnesota squad.

I agree with this. I just hope it's not Seattle overpaying Darnold.

I’m sorry, but I cannot believe the take on this by the folks on this board. McCarthy was not a great college quarterback and tore his ACL this year and yet to take a regular season snap in the NFL.Now people want to give up a second round and fourth round pick for him? What is this world coming to?

We're just getting impatient and want to move on from what we currently have.

For two reasons,

JJ brings HOPE, 12s on dot net love them a truck load of HOPE. Winning is secondary when folks shifted their focus to 'he just need more time, and touches'.

GeNO, aka 'no hope', the feeling to replace Geno with anyone is strong on dot net.

If they will take that deal you make it immediately. They won’t though.

Jim Harbaugh disagrees with your assertion of his play at Michigan. I will take his word over some internet rando.

Most college coaches would say that of their former players. By the way, it’s not Internet rando if you watched him play like I did in college. I saw the same exact games that his coach did. Nice try though.

Just to give you some information which is factual that I am 100% positive you did not know:

This from PFF:
The biggest area of concern for McCarthy is his accuracy when throwing outside of the numbers. On such pass attempts, he recorded a 27.1% uncatchable throw rate, ranking 48th out of 105 eligible FBS quarterbacks.

I watched him play college football as well. He’s not terrible at all.

You are definitely an internet rando. As am I and everyone else in this thread.

May I offer an advice? Analytics, and opinions from former coaches or players are both frown upon on dot net . Guys trust their own eyes, trained or not, eyes that blessed with love, passion, and emotions turbocharged with adult beverages.

Having formally played football and also watching it for 40 years, I do not consider myself just some internet rando however, you by all means can consider yourself this. Also, I never said he was terrible but he is a complete crapshoot with ok but not great college numbers and skillset, and also coming off a torn ACL. I would not be willing to give up much for this given scenario.

The Vikes should hold on to both for 2025. McCarthy had to have two surgeries, and he's never played a meaningful snap.

I would. The Vikings won’t. But I definitely would.
