If Darnold was in his 30’s I’d definitely believe they wouldn’t trade McCarthy. The fact that McCarthy is only 21 and Darnold 27 adds at least a little intrigue. Getting a player at 27 just coming into his prime and coming off the year he has makes the offseason for Minnesota extremely interesting. On one hand, with Darnold they essentially know what they have. Do they see him as their QB for the next 10 years? He certainly could be. If he is, then McCarthy is clearly an asset that they could and probably should cash in on.
McCarthy is a complete unknown at the NFL level. Darnold now has 7 years of NFL experience. If the Vikings put either one of them on the trade market, who would get the most attention? Darnold did next to nothing in his first 6 years. Is that because of the teams he was on and their mismanagement of the position? Or did it just take him longer to adjust to the NFL game. From what I have seen this year and if I was Minnesotas GM, I’d want to continue with the veteran who has finally lived up to his draft status.
This is kind of reminding me of the Brett Favre situation. The Falcons drafted QB Chris Miler in 1987 and Favre in 1991. Favre sat in 1991 while Miler was the Falcons starter. Miller threw for over 3000 yards and 26 TDs. This was enough for the Falcons to believe that Miller had finally arrived. The Falcons traded Farve to the Packers in the offseason for the 17th overall pick.
Darnold is a free agent at the end of this season. Will the Vikings franchise tag him, sign him to an extension or let him walk. If he goes elsewhere via FA, he will have a lot of suitors and is in line for a huge payday.
If the Vikings falter in the playoffs I’d look for them to move on from Darnold. If they go deep but come up a little short, I highly doubt they would want to roll out in 2025 with a completely inexperienced QB.
