"Minnesota doesn't have a 2nd round pick. A 3rd round pick or a 4th round pick. Seattle? They can get McCarthy for a 2nd and a 4th. Maybe a 2nd, 4th and 5th"

Yeah, if the Vikings were that stupid, absolutely do that trade.

They're not though. They could pretty easily get at least a first rounder. He's better and younger than any of the top QBs in this draft. As usual, Cowherd doesn't know what he's talking about. Like he usually has a general idea, but doesn't do any research beyond whatever the most superficial form of his talking point is

I don't see a scenario where Vikings trade JJ. Darnold will hit FA and get overpaid by someone else, probably the Giants. He'll prove to be the same mid QB he's always been and JJ will enjoy similar success with a top notch Minnesota squad.

Well, IF they stick with Darnold and give him a deal, you absolutely have a shot to trade for him.
Maybe they'd trade him after next year. But it would be stupid to trade JJ this year even if you signed Darnold. Especially for some mid rounders.

I would do it for sure. The Vikings are not doing it though. We haven't even reached the official offseason yet and these absurd trades are being floated around already

I dont see the Vikings making a trade for JJ, i think they ride Darnold for as long as they can maybe tag him this year and see how it works out. they will slide JJ in when they need to and keep moving forward. Darnolds production this is a direct reflection of the coaching he is getting and i think they will stay with him if they can. JJ still on a rookie contract no need to hurry him up as long as Darnold is there and producing.

Vikings fans have seemed confident all year that Darnold will be walking at the end of the season regardless, but I doubt most of them were seeing a potential 15-2 season when they said that. If Darnold leads them to a deep playoff run, like at least to the conference championship game, I think they'll have to seriously consider whether he's more than just the guy for now. He's still only 27.

I could see maybe hedging their bets by tagging Darnold and holding onto McCarthy for at least another year, but if they decide to really commit to Darnold, keeping McCarthy just prevents them from acquiring capital that could be used to improve the team around their leader.

I don't think they ultimately make McCarthy available, but I don't think it's COMPLETELY out of the realm of possibility either. What happens in the playoffs could make their decision difficult.

If it's for a 2nd and 4th I'd take it, if it's more then no. He's already had 2 surgeries so that's concerning

Has cowherd started contributing to heavy.com? Because one would normally find this sort of click-bait trade proposal at heavy.com.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes, anyone would make that trade if the Vikings were dumb enough to offer those terms. But if I'm the Vikes GM, I know how much more I can squeeze out of a team for a first-round QB and I know I'm holding all the cards.

That said, I started the season pretty cynical on Darnold, but he's been making a believer out of me the last few games. I think the Vikes are going to want to hold onto that.

If Darnold was in his 30’s I’d definitely believe they wouldn’t trade McCarthy. The fact that McCarthy is only 21 and Darnold 27 adds at least a little intrigue. Getting a player at 27 just coming into his prime and coming off the year he has makes the offseason for Minnesota extremely interesting. On one hand, with Darnold they essentially know what they have. Do they see him as their QB for the next 10 years? He certainly could be. If he is, then McCarthy is clearly an asset that they could and probably should cash in on.

McCarthy is a complete unknown at the NFL level. Darnold now has 7 years of NFL experience. If the Vikings put either one of them on the trade market, who would get the most attention? Darnold did next to nothing in his first 6 years. Is that because of the teams he was on and their mismanagement of the position? Or did it just take him longer to adjust to the NFL game. From what I have seen this year and if I was Minnesotas GM, I’d want to continue with the veteran who has finally lived up to his draft status.

This is kind of reminding me of the Brett Favre situation. The Falcons drafted QB Chris Miler in 1987 and Favre in 1991. Favre sat in 1991 while Miler was the Falcons starter. Miller threw for over 3000 yards and 26 TDs. This was enough for the Falcons to believe that Miller had finally arrived. The Falcons traded Farve to the Packers in the offseason for the 17th overall pick.

Darnold is a free agent at the end of this season. Will the Vikings franchise tag him, sign him to an extension or let him walk. If he goes elsewhere via FA, he will have a lot of suitors and is in line for a huge payday.

If the Vikings falter in the playoffs I’d look for them to move on from Darnold. If they go deep but come up a little short, I highly doubt they would want to roll out in 2025 with a completely inexperienced QB.

I was too but after watching him 3 times this year he’s impressed me every time. Hes playing really good football.

That rookie contract though for 4 more years has to be so enticing for the Vikings. You can spend that money keeping your elite unit and/or adding to it.
