costly. but a clear upgrade over hackett and direction going forward.

i wonder if they think that roster is only a player or 2 away from contending. me3 could have a bounce-back season with payton at the helm. but me3 is rapidly declining and isn't their future. their offensive line is terrible. their running backs are bad outside of javante williams, who had a season ending injury. that whole offense outside of jeudy/sutton is a mess.

according to sportrac they only have 3.6m in cap space. and no 1st or 2nd in this draft. it's gonna be tough to upgrade that roster for next season.

so they may need to hit the reset button on that roster. blow the whole thing up. that could mean they sell off all their player assets to gain as much future draft capital as possible. pat surtain would net atleast a mid 1st. courtland sutton would net a 2nd or 3rd, justin simmons a 1st or 2nd, jeudy a 2nd.

If i were a broncos fan I'd be pretty furious. they've now quadrupled down on Russ.

-Traded a boat load for him
-Contract before he took a snap
-sent hackett packing
-traded a boat load for payton

So far all they have to show for this is one 5-win season. If they don't win a Superbowl in the next 2 years, what a huge waste of time and resources.
I live in the Denver metro and the idea of getting Payton was a plus until it started becoming clear that they may have to give up the kinds of picks they just did to get him. Really hard to plug holes in the team with all the draft capital they've given up. There is some surprise that Payton would come here given other options, but here he is.

Unless Payton can get the offense under Wilson turned around this is going to be a disaster. George Paton made that huge commitment to get Wilson, then put the team on the hook for his extension (which doesn't even kick in until the season after next for cap hits). Greg Penner is riding this down with Paton now and they have such a tight space to work in nobody is going to be surprised if this is a further disaster.

Payton is overrated, over paid, and not worth the picks. I'll be surprised if this works out.
I know right. What am I missing here. Because Payton coached Drew who is the same height as Wilson, Wilson is automatically gonna be good. It's a copycat league, right. Payton doesn't have a magical system to make Wilson good. The only thing I see happening is Wilson won't be heaving it 60 yards down field to a triple covered receiver instead of checking it down. If I remember correctly Drew was good before Payton and Wilson has always been overrated. I agree, I'll be surprised if this works out.

I can picture it now, it's week 8 of the '23 season, Denver is 2-6, it's MNF, Payton starts yelling at Wilson as he's coming to the sideline after his 4th straight 3 & out, "You're not Drew Brees. YOU'LL NEVER BE DREW BREES!"

Russ will resurrect his career under Payton.
If anyone besides PC can do it, perhaps you’re right.

It will be interesting to see. Definitely zero bearing on the Hawks.

If Denver is not successful, say the bar is making the playoffs, then I’d say the me3 trade trumps the Herschel Walker trade and goes down as the worst in history.

Not buying it. Denver and Russ wanted SP from the get go.
Seems Payton was the guy they wanted most, but tried lowballing Ryans for peanuts and no draft capital first.

Why did the Broncos have to "trade" for Payton anyway? Wasn't he out of football for a year and could do what he wants? What kind of ownership did the Saints have over him anyway?

Payton was still under contract with the Saints after 2021. And it doesn't expire until 2024. So the Broncos needed to pay off the Saints to get him.

Payton just wanted to grab one more big paycheck before permanently retiring after going 0-17 in 2023.
Much better chance Russell kills another coach, than the coach resurrects the Hollywood has been..
Listen to everything Payton tells you, then go out and do it your way...

Payton turned down a lax TV job with a huge salary to coach the Broncos......

Has there been any coach more overrated in recent years than Payton? His teams generally did well in regular season, but wow, how many times did they blow it in the playoffs? If my memory is correct, they even once lost to a 7-9 team in the wildcard round. If they had simply signed him, that'd be one thing, but giving up considerable compensation? That's just flat-out lunacy. Damn, I wish we were getting picks of theirs after this draft, because this is going to blow up in their face.

Well don't forget they got completely gypped out of the Super Bowl just a few years ago because of the most blatant no-PI call ever.

I do think that Payton is overrated. All of that being said, if there is one thing Payton does well, it's making his QB's look good. He's a QB guru and just about every guy that has played with him has looked decent. Winston looked better than he ever did as a Saint, Bridgewater had arguably his best years as a Saint, Brees took the next step under Payton. His defenses have been the weak spot, but they've got a lot of talent to work with there.

Payton may be overrated as an HC, but he still is an above average HC. Let's also be honest with the real reason he was brought in. Payton is just about the only guy capable of salvaging Wilson's career at this point. They're stuck with Wilson for many years -- and Payton has a long track record of making his passers look good. There is also no one else in the NFL that has as much experience working with short QB's.

Payton may not be the best coach in the NFL, but he's probably the only one capable of righting the cesspool of a situation down in Denver. They're tied to Wilson for a long time at this point. If there was one guy that is capable of turning Wilson around, it is him. This is what the Broncos are gambling on -- I'm not even sure that he's going to be able to do it either. Wilson has to be humble enough to accept his critique and run his offense, at this point I'm not sure he is capable of doing that.
