Unlock Lock?

I'm still on the fence about Geno. At times he looks pretty decent in general, at least in terms of avoiding turnovers (mostly), seems to have a good grasp of the offense (even if he's being restrained a bit in terms of stretching the field but that could be coverage - not trust - issues), and has a decent arm and can move if need be.

However, I am wondering at what point we will see Lock in 2022? I always thought it would be a near certainty, i.e., it wasn't if, but when. Unless Geno goes on a tear and plays above his head but with 6 quarters with zero points to show for it, it seems that it is not unlikely that Pete may make the decision to turn to Lock in the coming weeks if things don't change offensively.

So what are your thoughts? Is it time to "Unlock Lock" if we lose this Sunday or should Geno be given another few games to see if he can get this offense to click?

What I'd like to see is them open up the offense with Geno. Sure he looks good, as would just about any quarterback with how simple and basic our offense has been so far. This is the main reason why our offense hasn't scored in the last 6 quarters this season. Defenses have us figured out. Geno is a veteran quarterback who has been in our system since the beginning. If we can't open it up for him by now, then we never will. I blame the coaching staff as much as Geno for this. What do we have to lose in letting him open it up and see what he can do? Are they afraid he might actually win some games?

I think a couple things have gone into not seeing Lock yet. Perhaps Lock is still suffering from some leftover Covid crap. Probably the bigger reason is that Geno has done just enough and hasn’t really made enough big mistakes to pull him. Or maybe a third thing… Geno is just plain better.

This team is far from being ready to be competitively ready. There is some young talent in key places, they just need some more seasoning before whoever gets to cook.

Pretty sure we are more than just a QB away.

Like I said before, let Geno play through a few more games and even Geno's hardcore supporters will give in.

There is too much risk in benching Geno while he's playing well, and the team is still in contention. So I don't think we'll see Lock until at least week 8.

Geno is a strange QB to evaluate. He's elite in almost every advanced category besides points and yards, and 2 or 3 explosive plays per game from being a top 8 QB. It will be interesting to see how those stats change as he's given more control because, despite the overwhelming pessimism surrounding him, Geno's played reasonably well against two elite defenses.

I think that Carroll really believes that we're going to be competitive this year. His rhetoric and some of his decisions that he's made say as much. He's approaching this as if we're going to have a chance at the Super Bowl.

Geno Smith is the option that aligns the most with Carroll's philosophy. Geno is the safe player, the good soldier that will go out there and do your bidding without complaint or deviation from the script. He also has a year within this system.

Lock on the other hand is going to make us worse in the short term. Lock doesn't have many of the nuances of being QB down yet. For example, we saw him miss an easy blitz -- a play that Geno picked up several times in the preseason game. He also looks shaky reading defenses, in the last game he played he just stared his first read down.

The thing that Lock DOES add is potential vs. Geno Smith. I personally think that starting Geno doesn't make much sense given the state of this roster. I think this season needs to be looked at as a developmental season where you trot out your young talent and see what sticks. Geno Smith doesn't really give us anything other than a QB that doesn't turn the ball over.

I voted "Other" because I'm not sure a "couple more games" is necessary. I think he should start against Atlanta, for sure, and maybe get the whole game, but I think I would give him a short leash and if we don't move the ball better and start scoring some points, I'm all for Unlock Lock soon.

I'm ok either way....until this team becomes more efficient overall in it's playing capabilities, i'm for either Geno or Lock...flip the coin each week to see who plays, I don't care. Whoever plays, perfect...we got some Seahawks football to watch.

My question for the Lock crowd is, what if he's significantly worse than Geno? Do you go back to Geno after destroying his confidence? How will you square that circle early in the season with a veteran team still in contention? You only make that move soon if you are 99% sure he gives the team a better chance to win; otherwise, you risk detonating the locker room for Lock's perceived upside, which means ****-all to the veteran players on the team.

Geno would probably have a shorter leash if Lock didn't absolutely blow his britches to smithereens against Dallas and throw like 5 interceptable balls.

Not to mention simply failing to pick up the blitz against the Steelers and getting himself clocked blindside, losing the ball.

I'm all for competition, but I mean, Drew showed nothing. He played fairly well in the Steelers game other than a game-losing error, but Geno also played fairly well in the preseason...

Honestly I don't think it really matters who starts for us. Neither is our long term answer. Neither is signed past this season, so we can't even build trade value. All I want to see is our offense try to be good. I'd rather they open it up for Geno (or Lock) and fail trying, than continue to watch them play safe ball and hope our defense or special teams can win for us. We definitely aren't winning many games if we keep struggling to score.

Is now the time for Lock? No.
Will we see Lock this season? Yes.

I think they will start him after the bye week. Which is kind of dumb to play him the last five weeks of the season.

At this point I'm happy to just play out the season with Geno.

The ugly INT Lock threw in preseason was unforgivable, and that was only one of his mistakes.

Leaving Geno in as a stable guy who knows the system makes much more sense while you're evaluating your young offensive line and trying to get the run going. Bringing Lock in doesn't help that process at all.

Neither of them are taking us to the playoffs, so leave the guy there who knows the system and can help the guys around him learn and improve.

What is the difference? Neither has the promise of success. Currently, they should leave Geno in and see how he looks against the Falcons. Even though we all know he's not going to turn any heads.

Edit: I do think at some time they need to start Lock. If it's only to see what he can or can't do. After all he was acquired in the trade of our starter.
