This is a list of the top NFL IDL per year salaries.

Look at the players around Jones pay rate. They're all 2 tiers above him.

Look at the players around Williams projected pay rate. They're 1-2 tiers better than he is. I've seen every one of them take over and have huge impact in multiple games. I haven't seen Williams play at that level, ever. He is a very, very good player. But he is not at the level that warrants a huge contract.

After those listed above, salaries drop off quickly. My evaluation has Jones equal to players in the 8.0-10.0 range, and Williams in the 12.0-16.0 range.

This board seems to be infected with the JS "overrate and overpay replacement(-) to replacement(+) level players in the trenches" virus.

I've been hoping it was mostly on PC that we could never build the trenches after the SB era guys moved on. I was hoping JS would turn it around, with MM's help, and start building the lines successfully. Hope is waning.

Clint Hurtt was never capable of putting any of the defensive line in a position to succeed. He had a scheme early in the season that got Jarran Reed in a position to succeed, but like the previous season, his schemes only worked for about six weeks until teams figured a way to counter it. Anyone who wants to bag on our players performance the past two seasons on defense has to take in to account that Clint Hurtt was one of the least prepared for his promotion than anyone we will see in our lifetimes.

I want to give you an example that may demonstrate, in 2021 we signed Kerry Hyder after a couple of decent sack seasons for a couple of different teams as a backup in Detroit and only one as a starter in San Francisco. Ken Norton Jr., who was not a good DC in his own right, was not sure who should be making the line calls for stunts and games, so Hurtt puts forth Hyder as the guy. Hyder had never called the stunts and games at any level, and it turned into a spectacular failure. Only Carlos Dunlap had a few sacks due to stunts. Hurtt was responsible for that failure. He never should have been promoted and it got the head coach fired. If it wasn't for his buddy Vic Fangio being hired by the Eagles, so Hurtt had a landing spot, he would be out of the league.

I fear you are right. Do you think Williams is on the same level as Payne, Lawrence, Hargrave, and Buckner?

IMO he is well below that level of player.

Jones is a DE. Williams is a DT, though both can move around the line effectively. Still, the payscale for the two positions is different.
Dre'mont Jones and Williams are both 3-4 DE.
Chris Jones is a 4-3 DT.

Just to stave off mass confusion.
