SF realizes their WR corps are a bit in turmoil - it will be interesting to see how Davis factors into the passing game this year - he was a huge monster threat prior to Kaepernick (since Smith never targeted WR's) - since then, he has been pretty ordinary (as ordinary as Vernon Davis can be). Also, bringing in a new guy means a tremendous amount of learning and repetition that simply isn't there as of right now - that is also a huge relief. Even if this new guy is good, he truly can't be an impact.
The turmoil is mostly caused by injury. If Crabtree hadn't gotten hurt than we'd have Crabtree-Boldin and this wouldn't even be something to talk about.
Losing Crabtree hurts. Getting Boldin helps. At issue is who is the #2 WR early on. Patton hasn't really gotten his shot yet because of an injured hand, but he's just been cleared for practice. Kyle Williams IMO will be the #2 WR...his issue is that he hasn't played in preseason because he's coming back from a torn ACL. It was just announced Manningham will start the season on the PUP.
Thats FOUR guys right there that would make the WR position look very different if they were healthy. Two of them will be here in short order. The other two are question marks.
As for Davis, the press talking about him playing WR is WAY, WAY overblown. What they are doing is lining him up all over the field in order to make it more difficult to take him away. He wasn't really on the same page with Kaep early on, but that all changed in the playoffs. They have been fantastic together in camp.
